SharePoint Server 2010 is not installed on this computer.

Question

We've installed SharePoint 2010 SP1 and connected it to SQL 2012 RC0.  The order was maybe a little backwards in that we installed SQL 2012 in a default mode and then decided to install SP2010.  In any case, SharePoint is operational.  We can access Central Admin and our defualt site.

We then attempted to install PowerPivot for SharePoint.  When we get to the Installation Rules section, SQL 2012 says "SharePoint Server 2010 is not installed on this computer."  Please install SharePoint before you install PowerPivot for SharePoint."  All other rules show as "Passed".

I see that in SQL 2008 (probably including R2), there is a option to point PowerPivot towards an existing Farm.  In SQL 2012, that option doesn't appear.

Any thoughts on how to resolve this?

We're going to install the RTM version of SQL 2012 that was released yesterday.  Maybe this will resolve the issue.

Just checking but is it the Enterprise Edition og Sharepoint 2010 SP1 that is running on your server ?

Yes.  SharePoint 2010 is the Enterprise Edition.  We installed SP1 as well as the August 2011 CU.

The setup is very basic at this point:  A single WFE hosting SharePoint and a server hosting SQL 2012 RTM.

When I go to Central Admin, the server running SQL Server (SQL 2012 RTM) is listed.  Interestingly it seems to indicate it's hosting a SharePoint 2010 Foundation Database.  I'm not sure if that's normal.

The PowerPivot checks indicate that SharePoint 2010 is the correct edition, SP1 is installed and it does recognize this is part of a farm.

As I read the exact wording of the message, it says SP2010 is not installed on this server.  I'm running the PowerPivot setup on the SQL server.  Does SP2010 need to be installed on the server hosting SQL OR is this installation supposed to happen on the WFE?  I'm not sure I'm seeing this specified in the various documents I've read.

Hi,

The Powerpivot to Sharepoint setup should be done on the system where SP 2010 is installed. It will install the required files and also the PowerPivot Configuration tool in there which you will use to configure PowerPivot for Sharepoint environment. After configuration you will have the service applications (PowerPivot System service and proxys) and databases configured and you should be good to go.

That was it.  Everything I had seem up to this point said to run SQL setup, run the SQL setup again or re-run the SQL setup.  All seemed to suggest that this process should occur on the server hosting SQL 2012.  Running setup on the correct server made the difference.
