On-Premise gateway for SQL Managed Instance Data Source RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

MS Documentation mentions that we need to install an on-premise gateway to use SQL managed instance as a source for Azure Analysis services. Is this required even with the new public end point? If yes, where does the gateway needs to be installed? Any VM on the VNet ? Any details/documentation on the settings, configurations etc.

    Please advise,

    Thanks,

    AJ

  • Hi

Azure SQL Database Managed Instance is supported. Because a managed instance runs within Azure VNet with a private IP address, an On-premises Data Gateway is required. Azure SQL Database Managed Instance with a public endpoint is currently not supported.

It should be within the VM which is within the Vnet/Private Networks.

Detailed steps with Pre-requisites are as follows. Hope this is helpful.

    Thank you

  • Thanks Naveen for the clarification, just a follow-up, similar to Power BI, do we need to manage individual data sources and add them to the gateway (in this case the Managed Instance) for Analysis Services? Is there a place in the portal to do this for adding the individual data sources to the gateway?

    Thanks,

    AJ

  • Actually Azure Analysis Services do support connection to SQL Managed Instance via public endpoint i.e. without using on-premises data gateway from very recently.

Documentation has been updated last night:
