Live Messenger 2011 social/msn page slow and uses up CPU

Question

Hi!
I installed Messenger 2011 and it takes very ling to load up, then it is very slow when scrolling through the social (mainly facebook) updates.
I watched msnmsgr.exe using procexp and saw heavy CPU usage at MxMUm.dll!OpenAdapter+0x85576
You can't use it like that, so I'll re-install Windows today and see if that helps.

Re-Installing Windows did suprisingly NOT help!
I have a feeling it has to do with my Graphics card / display driver.
I have a Matrox M9120 PCIe x16.
When I'm in Live Photo Gallery it's also very CPU intensive. (WLXCodecHost.exe and WLXPhotoGallery run at high CPU even when minimized)
I know this is a developer forum, and I'm probably wrong here.
Is there a better place I can post my issue?
Thanks!

I think I have similar issue with 2011. It's SLOW! I was looking on how to disable all that "fly-in" graphics in hopes of speeding it up, to no avail. I really really really do not fancy having flying-in lists of my contacts. It takes extra few seconds EVEY time I am opening the window. Fly-in did not go away with disablement of Aero, nor could I find anything to kill that annoying addition. I am using Messenger way too often to spend time on watching it drawing lists. Bye-bye 2011, I am reinstalling 14.0.8089.726 build (which was an adventure to find)

Hello there,
Sorry to say that I am experincing the same problems, whenever I wan to chat with one of my contacts I double press the contact and believe me I can go make a coffee and return and the chat windows does not come up.
I am sorry to say that I have been a vivid user of MSN for many years and yesterday I un-installed the Live Messenger and replaced it for the meantime with Trillian.
I really home that there will be a good solution enabling me return to Messenger.

ive just noticed the same problem on my laptop installed the new msn and my laptop has slowed right down i was closing everything to restart see if that helped and noticed my cpu was still at 50% with everything closed so i opened task manager to see where the processes were being used and it was down to messenger and it was holding there too a constant 50% ive closed it then opened it again and now its at 2-3% strange might have to pay a trip to oldversions.com myself.
has no1 sussed a possible cause or solution to this problem??
i remember last time msn was updated i had problems and that was a conflict with a program or driver or summit i had to delete

I have the exact same problem on my Acer.
It is a dual core system and opening up a conversation window causes 100% CPU usage, making it 100% useless because the program just locks up.
The program has also become extremely bloated in this next release. All I want is something simple that works. I'm also an Xbox Live gold member, why does messenger have to have ads when I sign in?
I'm afraid i'm going to have to switch to another program.

My messenger has suddenly become unusable.,
It lags so hard it uses over a minute to open the main window itself, if someone tries to send me a message I just get a white window for a couple of minutes while it does nothing.
I tried reinstalling it but I get the same problem.
Pretty much makes msn messenger unusable.

Yep, the new version of messenger seems to be loading a different type of banner ad than before - many of the ads are causing the messenger interface to run extremely slowly.
Doesn't look like Microsoft are in much of a hurry to do anything about this.
I will be switching to Miranda IM client - as are most of my colleagues in the office.Friday, November 19, 2010 11:44 AM -
Incidentally, you'll notice that if you switch from full view to compact view or vice-versa it forces a reload of the ad, which usually fixes the problem temporarily - that is at least until the next ad that runs a dodgy script comes along.

Windows Love Essential 2011 is really annoying application. When you sign in, it takes all CPU resources making computer slow. Ending messenger process and restarting mostly fixes my sign-in process.Saturday, December 4, 2010 6:16 PM

Seems bunch of immatures have developed new MSN 2011... Extremely slow loading taking long long time while opening for the first time. At my end there is no question on hardware efficiency.. using i7 with 6 GB ram.
Please provide a fix for msn ASAP

Me too. Win 7 64bit ultimate i7 12GB. whole bunch of issues - can't remote assist - this is a biggie, 'cos I use this feature a lot; also randomly almost freezes - ie machine runs extremely slowly and taskmanager displays a steady 13% CPU usage . . .
Re-installed previous version from Filehippo.com

MSN Messenger 2011 Came through Windows Update and it's incredibly annoying. No longer do I have the option to turn off the ads that load when messenger starts up, slow as heck, please fix it!Sunday, February 13, 2011 1:16 AM

It is so slow, the worse IM ever.
I have a core 2 dual processor notebook with 4 GB ram with windows 7 professional, WLM is the most slow application I have here, it is unusable, I cannot understand why they make so slow.

for me it's the same. No matter how many times I close WLM and reopen it... no matter if add is reloaded, or IE connections settings. From time to time WLM eats 50% of the CPU making my pc too slow... please give some real solution as none of the above worked. Release a new version with less functionalities but that work. For instance, I don't use all the SOCIALNETWORKS stuff; I only use WLM to chat with friends (no sharing photos, nor videos, or anything else). I use it to communicate (chat, videocamera, even voice) for work. Is it possible to really disable all other functionalities (social stuff)??
thanks a lot!

The new MSN Messenger 2011 is very slow, sometime is not showing my contact list, high cpu usage.
Its EXTREMALY USELESS, I uninstalled it some weeks ago because of this problems but I need to use Live Mesh so its automaticaly reinstalled :-(
I'm uninstalling msn messenger 2011 again and reinstalling the 2009 version, now.
No patch ? No updates ? No Microsoft news about this problems?

Every now and then I install Microsofts Live Messenger to see if they've finally made it usable. Unfortunately every time I do I find it to be more bloated and slow than the last time.
My advice to everyone here is to try an alternative messenger client.
Just google (or bing :P ) for Trillian, Miranda IM or Pidgin. They're all alot better than Live Messenger. They lack a few features, but if all you want to do is chat and swap files, they're worlds better than Microsofts alternative.

The only real decent (and 100% free) solution is Digsby. Get it at www.digsby.com.
Sadly it is only for Windows. For Linux/Mac the Miranda or Pidgin are available (but they are not as good as Digsby).
I actually like Trillian, but I don't like the fact that it is a paid software. So, I won't recommend or support it whatsoever!
