The ComputerName is empty (-) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

    We are moving our resources from Azure Service Mangement mode to ARM mode.

    To do that, i just copied the VHDs to a new V2 storage account.

    I than used Powershell + JSON to create a new virtual machine using the VHD (Attach option in JSON)

    All the operations were successful, the VMs boot and i'm able to communiate with them.

    The only matter is that the ComputerName is empty (-)

    I tried to restart, recreate the VM, but it's the same issue.

    How to troubleshoot that ? Is there any need for the Azure Agent ?

    Note:

    - If i deploy a VM from the gallery, it's good, the computer name is shown

  • Hi,

    Edit :   Apologies for the confusion. Yes, ARM is now in GA.

    It is not possible to attach the disk from the preview portal for ARM VM as of now.

  • How we create ARM virtual machines from existing VHD using the preview portal?

    AFAIK, this is only possible way is via Powershell or RestAPI ?

    Can you share it with us please.

    I want to note that ARM hit GA on June 30, especially for IaaS

  • Update to this thread.

    I noticed that i'm unable to do other operations via the GUI, like attaching a data disk or even change the VM size.

    When attaching a data vhd, i receive the following error.

    "Failed to attach existing disk 'VMname-data-01' to the virtual machine 'VMNAme'. Error: PropertyChangeNotAllowed: Changing property 'osProfile' is not allowed."

    My diagnosis:

    In fact, the JSON template i used to create a VM form an existing VHD use the 'attach' option on the Storage Profile

    "storageProfile" : {
                   "osDisk" : {
                      "caching" : "ReadWrite",
                      "createOption" : "Attach",
                      "name" : "[variables('OSDiskLabel')]",
                      "osType" : "[parameters('osType')]",
                      "vhd" : {
                         "uri" : "[concat('http://',parameters('SAName'),'.blob.core.windows.net/',variables('ContainerName'),'/',variables('OSDiskName'),'.vhd')]"
                      }
                   }
                }

    When using the 'Attach' option on the storage profile, we cannot use the OS Profile in the JSON template (I tried to add an OS profile section, but when deploying a VM, an error is thrown saying that the OS Profile is not supported) -->The OS Profile does not exist in my JSON

    The following is the VM configuration (Get-AzureVM output)

    ResourceGroupName        : RGANME
    Id                       : /subscriptions/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/resourceGroups/yyyyyyyyyyyyyyy/providers/Microsoft.Compute/virtualMachines/VMANME
    Name                     : VMNAME

                                 "DataDisks": [],

                                 "OSDisk": {

                                   "Caching": "ReadWrite",
                                   "CreateOption": "Attach",
                                   "Name": "VMNAME",
                                   "SourceImage": null,
                                   "VirtualHardDisk": {
                                     "Uri": "http://sav2.blob.core.windows.net/vname/vmname.vhd"
                                   }
                                 }
                               }
    DataDiskNames            : {}
    NetworkInterfaceIDs      : {/subscriptions/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/resourceGroups/RG-IT-P-ADDS-01/providers/Microsoft.Network/networkInterfaces/VNIC-Vmname
                              }

    Notice that the OS profile is empty. Is this expected ? Maybe this is the issue because, the Get-AzureVM for an normal VM shows the OS Profile section, and the ComputerName field is in this section

    OSProfile                : {
                                 "AdminPassword": null,
                                 "AdminUsername": "sam",
                                 "ComputerName": "VMTEST01",
                                 "CustomData": null,
                                 "LinuxConfiguration": null,
                                 "Secrets": [],
                                 "WindowsConfiguration": {
                                   "AdditionalUnattendContents": [],
                                   "EnableAutomaticUpdates": true,
                                   "ProvisionVMAgent": true,
                                   "TimeZone": null,
                                   "WinRMConfiguration": null
                                 }

  • Hi Samir,

    I was unable to repro this issue. I will update you at the earliest

    I suggest you to refer the below template and deploy your VM with existing VHD and also do mention the OS profile as there is a section for it. Please share the details.

  • Hi girish,

    the template You are referring to concerne creating a virtual machine from an image. M'y issue concerns creating a VM from existing VHD. You Can test it by creating a VM from the gallery, remove it (vhd will ne kept since it's ARM VM). Then use a template to create a VM from this VHD.

    cheers

  • Hi Samir,

    We request you to send the JSON file which you used to deploy to my email address vhypengiripatmicrosoftdotcom

    We would validate and update you at the earliest.

    I am trying to deploy the vm but its giving me an error. Possibly, I have the wrong codes.

  • Hi,

    It's a known bug from Azure Side. PG team is working for the same to mitigate in future release but no ETA.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

    Do you have any update about this issue?

    As I understand it, this seems to be a cosmetic issue and does not have any impact on the VM.

    Am I right?

    Thank you
