  • Try clearing SharePoint designer cache by follow the below steps.

    1. Close SharePoint Desginer2013.
    2. Delete everything from %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebsiteCache.
    3. Delete everything from %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache.
    4. Now open your SharePoint site from SPD it will definitely work.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi, Kammadanam,

It seems you are facing the error message "server side activities have been updated you need to restart sharepoint designer"

Sharath's fix is a possible solution. If that does not help. Please have a check if you installed Visual Studio on your machine.

You can try the following steps if you have VS installed

    1. Uninstall Visual Studio 2015 and SharePoint Designer 2013.
    2. Clear the cache. You can refer the steps in article: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/8fff5bcc-991a-4682-a5a4-b75d1372dd52/sharepoint-designer-web-cache to make sure that the environment is clear enough, so we can install SPD and VS one by one.
    3. Download SPD 2013 from the Office 365 portal ( https://portal.office.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx> Tools & add-ins > SharePoint Designer 2013).
    4. Install SPD 2013.
    5. Restart PC, add your account in SPD 2013 and see if you can open workflow successfully. If yes, go to Step 6.
    6. Install VS 2015 Enterprise
    7. Restart the PC to see if you can open workflow successfully.

  • This error usually occurs when you have custom workflow actions.
Here is how to get around this problem:

    1. Remove (move to different folder!) *.actions4 files located in %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\1033\Workflow (don't move Get, Send & Log file types!!!)

    2. Make iisreset in CMD as Admin & restart Windows Fabric Host Service and Workflow Manager Backend service.

    3. Clean SharePoint Designer 2013 Cache inthe following locations:

    - %APPDATA%\Microsoft\WebServer Extensions\Cache

    - %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebsiteCache

    4. Open SharePoint Designer 2013 (now you should be able to open workflow correctly but without custom actions).

    5. Add *.actions4 files back to %Program Files%\Common Files\Microsoft shared\Web Server Extensions\15\TEMPLATE\1033\Workflow

    6.  Make iisreset in CMD as Admin& restart Windows Fabric Host Service and Workflow Manager Backend service.

    7.  Open SharePoint Desginer 2013 and now you should be able to open workflows correctly.

This needs to be done by each user separately on the server. In my case I cannot use SP Designer on my computer but only via remote desktop.
