  • Because Visual Studio is so much more than a code editor I doubt that we will see an online version of Visual Studio in the near future. There is however a better way and that is to bring the online experience to the IDE, this is where Project "Tuscany" kicks in, people also call this Visual Studio "Live" but I don't like the Live moniker.

  • Depends on your concent of "online".  You can use Visual Studio "online" via the virtual labs: http://msdn.microsoft.com/virtuallabs/vstudio2005/default.aspx

I don't see the point of something like that for full-time Visual Studio development though.

  • Visual Studio... online means

It will work only with IE.. as it has to use Active X... and using IE means.. Visual Studio online is dead....

  • Check out wiki-os. It is a little operating system written in Silverlight. Within wiki-os users can develop their own applications using c# and xaml:

Another more recent example is the typescript playgroud:

I know that the whole studio suite would be way too much for a online version, but a kind of express edition would be really nice. Especially for the new mobile-devices (e.g. Win8 RT or even Android Tabs)

  • I'm currently building such a tool. It's going to be cross-browser, so no ActiveX requirements. It's entering a private beta stage in a couple of months. Name's Chpokk, online .Net IDE.
