Extended Security updates for Small Business Server (SBS) 2011 when migrating to Azure? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We would like to lift-and-shift an on-premise Windows Server Small Business 2011 server to an Azure VM by using Azure Migrate.
Could you tell me if this operating system is eligible for Extended Security updates since it's based on Windows Server 2008 R2?

    Thanks in advance.

  • No, SBS is not a licensing option on Azure.

    Just a reference: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/migration/windows-server/

  • I would investigate the workloads that reside on the server rather than 'lift and shift'.

If you have a DC on the server use ad connect - Group policy will need ADDS or a VM in Azure configured as a DC.  Don't forget to decommission the DC correct after migrating it.

If the server has SQL 2008 then use the DMA migration tool to move the database.

Assuming it has a legacy application that requires access you can then either move the application to a VM or if its a website use the webapp migration tool.

Email to 365. Shares to teams/onedrive.

Hope that may help in some way.
