Sql Server 2016, not able to access report builder from Browser RRS feed

  • Question

  • As it is known, the click once option for ReportBuilder is removed after SSRS 2014 onwards. From post SSRS2014, ReportBuilder needs to be installed as a standalone tool on client machine.

    Few Helps required now:

    1. Is there any way to edit the Reporting Template without asking user to install on uses's machine. (in SSRS 2014 it was not required as ReportBuilder gets installed automatically on user's machine)

    2. Is there any way to plugin the same ClickOnce option in SSRS2016.

    3. Is there any alternate way to fulfill the clickonce option in SSRS 2016 which was removed in previous versions.

Mainly we are looking for a solution of editing the template without external installation of ReportBuilder.

Waiting for your kind solutions. It would be a great help.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi manas.bhuyan,

Sorry to tell you that we only can edit and modify report in the separately installed Report Builder or SSDT, which is by design. Please refer to Reporting Services Tools which might help.

In addition, you can submit this thought to the Microsoft feedback at this link https://feedback.azure.com/forums/908035-sql-server.

If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider adding this feature to the next version.

    Best Regards,

    Amelia

  • Hi Amelia,

Thank you for your reply and the explanation.

I would like to elaborate more on this issue due to which we are currently in a critical situation.

    Here is the technical issue:

"We provide our own UI to customers where they can edit a selected template. On clicking of edit button we in turn invoke the clickonce URL which is like {http://ReportHostServer/ReportServer/reportbuilder/ReportBuilder_3_0_0_0.application?http://ReportHostServer/Reports/report/Workspace/SSRSAPPLICATION/Reports/ReportName}. This was working fine till SSRS 2014 as it automatically downloads and launches the report builder. With this implementation customers are working without any complains.

    The real issue begins when customers upgraded the version to 2016 and since then our application stops working as clickonce option is removed from 2016. After further analysis we found that a new format of url which is like {

    reportbuilder:Action=Edit&ItemPath=/Workspace/SSRSAPPLICATION/Reports/ReportName&Endpoint=http://ReportHostServer/ReportServer

} and it works fine for SSRS 2016 with the condition that customer has to separately install the ReportBuilder. At this point we are currently stuck whether we would ask customer to install or we provide some other way it works without installing the tool."

What is your suggestion on this --- Should we ask customers to separately install the tool or any other way to work without installing or some feasible workaround to achieve this ?

One more point, you mentioned in your last reply about "which is by design". Since when this is applied ?

    Waiting for your kind suggestions.

    Thank you in advance.

Yes, you need to ask customers to separately install the Report Builder.

Since SSRS 2016, we need to install Report Builder from the Microsoft Download Center or from a SQL Server Reporting Services web portal.

Please refer to Install Report Builder for more details.

  • Thank you Amelia for your answers.

Do you have the SSRS 2016 Report Builder Redistributable available ? so that we can include it in our installer package.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi manas.bhuyan,

    Thanks for your reply.

Sorry to tell you that Microsoft has not released Report Builder Redistributable packages, nor do I have Report Builder Redistributable.
