When should we choose Azure Data Explorer instead of Stream Analytics since they seem to have similar functionalities?

  • Azure Stream Analytics is meant for doing data processing on a data stream as the data is flowing, without the need to store it, providing insights on near real-time.

It has a notion of temporal windows of that data stream, up to several days, but cannot access the entire history of the data.
It is usually one of the components in the middle of a data pipeline - meaning it is not a final destination of the data, but more a station along the way.

Azure data explorer on the other hand, is a database (a compressed column store).
It can ingest, store, and query very large amounts of data (Petabytes).
It will usually hold data for at least a few days, and more often than not won't be a block in a chain of data processing component, but one of the final destinations of that data.
