Workflow Manager cannot process workflow activity after renew of certificate RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are using SharePoint + Project Server 2013 with Workflow Manager. Recently the certificate of the Workflow Manager has expired and we were having trouble renewing the certificate. After we renew the cert, the workflow stopped working and we ended up require to register a new workflow scope to SharePoint.

Although we were able to register with new scope and the workflow can start, the steps in the workflow does not seem to run by the Workflow Manager and there were no errors found in the SharePoint, Workflow Manager logs. We can only find the following warning in the Service Bus event log.

Does anyone know the reason why this occurred? Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi, Peter,

Per my knowledge the Event ID 30504 is not a issue which needs to worry about. Some discussion about it here

Did you install the CU4 for Workflow Manger before the renewal? Before this update, renewing the expired farm certificates was not allowed and the expired farm certificates lead to an unhealthy farm. This update allows the Workflow Manager PowerShell cmdlets to update the farm certificates when the current certificates are expired.

For it will be hard for me to check if the renewal work as expected, i will recommend you to open a ticket for this issue.

    Best Regards

    Jerry

  • Hi Jerry

Our version is CU1 and we updated the certificate with this version. If we have already updated the certificate, are there any ways for us to recover from this? Thanks.

    Best regards

    Peter

  • Hi, Peter,

For your scenario, the most straight forward fix will be re-installing the workflow manager. If the cert expired before your renew it.  A bit more information about CU4

I understand that may not be acceptable for your environment. To avoid possible impact and future trouble, raise a ticket on Microsoft and ask help for the support team will be a good choice.

    Best Regards

    Jerry
