How do you change the default email account in Windows Live Messenger to hotmail? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can anyone tell me how to change the default email account for Windows Live Messenger 2008 to hotmail?

At the moment it opens Windows Live Mail when the icon is clicked but I want it to open hotmail.  It used to work but does not anymore.  There seems to be no where in the toolbar options to change the default email.  I have also reinstalled Messenger (without uninstalling it) but did nothing.  I am running Vista Home Premium.  Thanks

  • this doesn't seem to work as I don't use Windows Live Email.  I use Hotmail and it is always the last email I use however the Icon in Windows Live Messenger stills opens Windows Live Email

  • Here's what I found at the Live Mail help site:

    >>>
To open WLM into the Inbox of the default account:

Create a new(or copy) or modify the existing WLM shortcut to:
    "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Mail\wlmail.exe" /mail

Note: There is a blank space in the above string prior to /mail

    --
    ...winston
    ms-mvp windows live mail

    <<<

That is, right click on your shortcut (wherever they are: Quick Launch, Programs List, etc).  Make sure you type it AFTER the quotation mark, and make sure you are in the "Target" box, not the "Start" In box.

  • Yes I can.  In windows live mail, right click on the email address you would like to set as the primary and select 'Set as default account'.

  • Change the default e‑mail program

Though Windows Mail is used as the default e‑mail program by web browsers and other programs that support sending e‑mail, you can choose a different e‑mail program as the default. If you decide you want to change the default e‑mail program back to Windows Mail, you can do so at any time.

    1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.

    2. Click Set your default programs.

    3. Under Programs, click the e‑mail program you'd like to use, and then click Set this program as default.

    4. Click OK.
