Changing project "Priority" field to dropdown RRS feed

  • Question

  • There has been a requirement where user would like to have a dropdown field for priority instead of number field.

Dropdown will display Low, Medium and High. They can actually have values 0, 500 and 1000 at the backend.

Is this doable? If it is, can we also change the priority number box that displays in the Project Information dialog?

Is there a logic in place for existing priority dropdown or if that value is used in some reports? If so, it changing to dropdown affect any native functionality?

Please suggest what could be the best approach here.

  • Hi KamalpreetSingh,

The project information dialogue box is not editable, so the answer is No.

  • Just to be clear. Ben is correct in his answer.

However, if you are not concerned with resource leveling.  You can create a custom field with your own priorities and have a drop down.  However, the resource leveling engine and task priority will not use your custom field.

  • The value is used in Levelling, when you level multiple projects at once.   It is not possible to change this priority box to be H,M,L.  If you are using project online/project server, then of course you could create your own Project Level Enterprise Custom Field which uses a lookup table containing the values H,M,L, which would then be used for grouping or sorting.

If I create a lookup field, can I also replace existing Priority field with this one in Project Information Dialog box in MS Project Professional?
