Embedded Compact 7 Firewall RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does Windows Embedded Compact 7 have a firewall or not?

It does not support the SYSGEN_FIREWALL catalog item, and there is no fwapi.dll or lib or header file included with the SDK. As a comparison, although CE6 does not list the firewall in the catalogue items tree, if it is added manually to the .pbxml file, then it suddenly does appear in the catalogue tree. Whilst this behaviour is broken, at least it is possible to manually add the component.

Note that in WEC7, it is possible to add the windows filter platform component, which apparently is (also) required to make the firewall work, but there is no firewall entry in the catalogitems.pbcxml file.

We develop on both the CE6 and WEC7 platforms, and are trying to enable the firewall for both, so it would be nice to have a definitive answer on whether WEC7 does, or does not have, a firewall. If it does, then how on earth does one add it to the build given that there is no catalogue support for it?

  • \WINCE700\public\CEBase\Catalog\cebase.pbcxml\cebase.pbcxml contains the following line:

But there is no item for this further down the xml...

    \WINCE700\public\CEBase\Catalog\odtcustom_device.pbcxml has the following:

Sample Firewall Service

A firewall service that enforces a set of rules that filter unsafe and unwanted network traffic on multiple transport layers, including IP and TCP.

But there is no Item:MS:sysgen_firewall, so I think this feature has been "streamlined" away from WEC7.

You could try to port the functionality from CE6...

    Good luck,
