Rename Project Server PWA instance URL RRS feed

  • Question

  • Need help please. Can you please suggest me for below problem.

    1.  Referring below URL I am trying to rename Project Server PWA instance URL. Old PWA URL is "http://devps/PWA" I have to change this URL to "http://devps/sites/ps2007". When I execute Copy-SPSite command I get an error message "Cannot rename the old site /PWA on copy" and the operation fails.
    Reference Url : http://www.toddklindt.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=372

Command used for Copying Site Collection : Copy-SPSite http://devps/PWA -DestinationDatabase PS_2007_ContentDB -TargetUrl
    http://devps/sites/ps2007

    2.  Even if I try taking the backup of the PWA instance using the stsadm backup command and restore it using stsadm restore command then also the operation fails and I get the same error message "Cannot rename the old site /PWA on copy".

Command used for Taking Site Collection Backup : stsadm.exe -o backup -url http://devps/PWA -filename C:\backup\backup.bak

Command used for Restoring Site Collection : stsadm.exe -o restore -url http://devps/sites/ps2007 -filename C:\backup\backup.bak
    -overwrite

    Thanks in advance...

  • Renaming PWA site collection name is not recommended. Why you need to rename the site?

  • Hi Hazeq --

Although the PWA web site is built within the SharePoint framework, it is far from a "normal" SharePoint site. It has its own set of databases, its own security model, and its own set of services that govern it. Please do not expect to manage a PWA web site as you would a "normal" SharePoint site.

If, for some reason, you need to change the URL or otherwise move a PWA site, I recommend that you try the following:

    • Back up all of the databases, including the four Project Server databases (Draft, Published, Reporting, and Archive) and the SharePoint Content database
    • Delete the PWA instance via the SharePoint Central Administration web site WITHOUT DELETING THE DATABASES
    • Re-provision PWA at a different URL using the same Project Server databases.

When you re-provision PWA and point to the four existing Project Server databases, the configuration and data from the original PWA instance should carry over to the new PWA instance.

Please also remember to attempt this procedure in a testing environment first; do not attempt this in a production environment without testing.

    Good luck!

  • You should do the following:

  • Deprovision PWA (or delete the PWA and keep the databases) and then Reprovision PWA under /Sites using the same databases.
