NTFS Alternate filestream RRS feed

  • Question

  • It might be nice to include the option to populate the file properties "summary tab" - or create a new tab - with source control information when a get, checkout, or checkin is done.  The alternate file stream could contain the TFS server name and path, changeset, checkin user and date for the version, checkout status, checksum, etc.  Since TFS does not store alternate files streams now, nothing is lost.

Eventually, some sort of generic file watcher - rather than having a VS solution open - could use this information to alert TFS if a non-TFS aware application changes or deletes a file in source control.  It would be nice to also update the file icon displayed in windows explorer to reflect source control status.  This would abstract some of the source control away from the IDE or application using the file.  Even Notpad could be integrated, in a way, with source control.  Just thinking out loud....
