Hosting multiple Azure SQL Data Warehouse in Single Azure SQL Server? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since DWU determines the compute power of Azure SQL Data Warehouse MPP architecture, what is the best practice of hosting multiple Azure SQL Data Warehouses. Does hosting them all in single Server has any performance impact during Query fetch cycles ?

    - Host all of them in one SQL Server. ( Latency is less if data is fetched across Data Warehouse  being hosted in same ? )

    - Categorize them in different SQL server may be by business verticals ( Single dedicated SQL server per Data Warehouse will have better performance, if yes then how DWU play a part here ?)

New to the azure world so clarity on the topic would help.

  • Thank you for your interest in Azure SQL Server and welcome to the MSDN forums.

The SQL Database server is a logical construct and provides a namespace for databases, elastic pools and datawarehouses.

The DTU/DWU are calculated per database/datawarehouse.

There is no performance benefits of your database and datawarehouse on the same server.
It really depends on your use case how you want to configure them.

Here are some points you should consider if you decide to host them on the same server.

Do you have different set of users for the database and datawarehouse?
If yes, you should configure Server level IP firewall rules and database level IP firewall rules separately.

Do you have different Azure RBAC requirements for the database and datawarehouse?
If yes, please be aware that databases, elastic pools, and data warehouses within a server inherit access rights from the server

Do you need to host them in different Azure regions?
If yes, please be aware that you can only host resources in the same region as the Azure SQL server

Do let me know if you have further questions.
