That's all? No verbose message, just the number?
FWIW, all 500-series errors are server errors, often permissions-related (e.g. login credentials, etc.). You need to provide more info—what protocol (FTP, FPSE,etc.)? Steps you're following ("Everything proceeds fine..." is way too vague), and so forth. Read the Forum FAQs and Guidelines - Start Here, and follow the posting guidelines on how to ask questions so others have the info needed to help you.

Okay, I thought there was only one way to publish to hard drive ergo self-explanatory. Here's what I've done:
1) Created a web site on server. It's up and running fine.
2) Wanted to copy to hard drive so as to not edit live to server via FTP. So:
3) Created folder C:\Expression_Website
3) Launched Microsoft Expression Web 4. Chose "Edit live site now."
4) Site > Manage Sites List > Add ... added C:\Expression_Website to list of managed sites.
5) Click on Site > Publish All Files To "C:\Expression_Website". Publishing Status window opens at bottom of screen saying: Publishing ftp:(website name) to C:\Expression_Website. About four seconds later, a small Windows error box (with yellow triangle with explamation point inside) pops up in middle of screen saying:
? (500).
Meanwhile, I can do OTHER functions in same FTP connection, such as opening web pages on the server. So it is a live, working FTP connection.
Thanks!

Open your local (now empty) site. Set it's Publishing Destination to be your FPT credentials and FTP directory of your live site.
Now click on the Publishing tab and click the "Connect to destination" link.
Your live site will open on the right, and your local (empty) site will open on the left.
Publish your site down using the arrow that points from right to left, down from the server.
From now on, it's this local site you will open, make changes in, and when connected in the publishing pane, publish changed files from left to right - up to the server.

What dId you use to create C:\Expression_website?
EW or Windows Explorer? If windows explorer, browse to C:\Expression_website using EW folder view, right click C:\Expression_website
and select convert to web.Or, delete C:\Expression_website using Explorer and create a new empty web using EW and name it.
