The Audio Device options only offer "Internal Microphone (Conexant 20585 SmartAudio HD)", and not a device for the PC system audio, in other words, what should be coming out of the speakers, which Windows says is the same Conexant device.

    I have Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit, 8GB ram, Intel i7 Q720 at 1.6GHz and Expression Encoder 4 SP2.  My machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad W510 (model 4318CTO).

From the descriptions of the product and in the forum, it seems as though I should be able to select an audio device to simply record the system audio, together with the video device screen capture.

The video capture is working well, but I can't select system audio, only the microphone.  Am I missing something, is recording system audio not available by design, or is there something wrong with this setup or the program?

I have checked the drivers and they indicate they are current.  This doesn't apepar to be the "no audio in preview" issue, the output file plays back with the screen video and the microphone input, but that isn't what I want - I want a clean recording of the system audio output, to which microphone recordings could be added as commentary.

Well, this is pretty disappointing.  After waiting about a month and doing some more research, it sounds like this is a common problem, which many people in other forums have attributed to a decision by Microsoft to no longer support what used to be called "stereo mix" or similar names under Windows 7.  The most common story given is that this is a response to pressure from the music industry.  A search for "windows 7 stereo mix" should provide all the information you might want about those theories for why "stereo mix" is no longer commonly available under Windows.

However, the most disappointing part of all of this is that the Microsoft people on this forum definitely should know about the lack of support for "stereo mix" recording and should have simply put a response to this question in the FAQs or in response to this post.
