     Answer
    Cause

You have a VSS user name in Login ID (SourceSafe) text box of the Plug-In Settings dialog in Visual Studio that is longer than 31 characters.

    Resolution

Change your VSS username to a value less than 31 characters.

    These steps reproduce the problem:

    1. Start Visual Studio 2005 or 2008.
    2. Go to Tools|Options|SourceControl|Plug-in Settings, type a username that is longer than 31 characters in the Login ID (SourceSafe) text box. For example type:

    domainThisisaveryverylongtestuse

Note that the control allows the long user name.
    3. Create an empty solution and save it.
    4. Try to add the solution  to source control.
