Windows IE update on my HP touchsmart

Question

I know little about computers and was given this for Christmas.  I have a windowns update that when I try to install, it says "We are detecting a newer version of IE on this computer."  Do I need to get Windows 8 before installing?  I know I'm on 64 bit IE, but the update that fails says "Installing IE x64 bit - Unsuccessful.  Should I call geek squad?   Thanks for whatever help anyone can give me.
