it didnt do anything
and i tried re-installing msn live,

have any other ideas?
Try this:
Go to Start Menu-Run
Type in: regedit
Say OK
Plus sign of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Plus sign Software
Plus sign Policies
Plus sign Microsoft
Plus sign System Certificates
Plus sign of Trusted Publisher
You will see a "safer key folder"
Delete that folder
Reboot
Try to re-login to Windows Messenger.
Hope this helps, it worked here.

Thanks again, BFGHOB, (Big Fat Grey Haired Old Bugger)
Thanks! Stevejph1 you are a "GENIUS", WORKS GREAT!!
- If this doesn't work try:
Windows 2000, Windows XP & Windows 2003 ONLY
Start/Run
Type "gpedit.msc" ENTER
Click + by Computer Configuration
Click + by Windows Settings
Click + by Security Settings
Click + by Software Restriction Policies
Click + by Trusted Publishers
For "Allow the following users to select trusted
publishers," the default is "End users."
If you do not have this at all, this does not apply.
This is typically the activeX error or the 0x800b0004

Just want to say a VERY BIG THANK YOU, my partner has been trying to resolve this problem for a couple of days now. I did what you suggested and it worked straight away! THANK YOU
It Works .... gracias !
This don't work for PC being part of a Windows 2003 Server Domain.
I had the policies for disabling Windows Installer and Windows Messenger enabled.
Installers are not running and Messener is returning 8004888d error.
Now, I had disabled those policies and Messenger continues returning the error.
Any advice?

- U rock man!!! mine messenger is fine now
actually the scenario was that ,, i had a power failure and when i restarted the pc ,, which is to run Windows Xp Sp3,, it started CHKDSK and while loading personal settings it told that ur registry has crashed bt windows has recovered the registry
bt when my desktop loaded it was with that green scenery ,, with recycle bin in right bottom corner
means ,, it started as if i have created a new user account and using it for the first time ,, and i say the "Documents and Settings" it had mine two folders ,, one with my user name and one with [<my username >+<My PC name.>] and it was newly created which was about the size of 31mb ,, nd other was about 4gb ,, so i attached my hardisk with other pc ,, and renamed my old user folder ,, with the name of new use folder which was created during this problem ,, and deleted the folder which replace after,,
means i replaced my old documents and settings with new one
and started my pc ,, thanx god ,, all was restored bt when i started to use the msn error 8004888d occured ,, which was fixed by doing as instructed by ur instructions,
Regards,!!! - Thank you steve..it worked perfectly..my live messenger is back up and running.x
- ur fantastic steve,,,thank u so much!!!!! im so gratefull but,,more so my kid is as she was really missing her friends so a very BIG thank u from her too!!!!

That worked fine for me..Thanks for d Info!- OK, this isn't working for me at all. I've got the 64-bit version of Vista Ultimate. When I attempt to register the DLL's that Steve mentions, I get error messages. Does this only work for a 32-bit version of Windows?
