Some users on some machines can sporadically not launch a click-once application. There are no messages or errors presented to the user. Occasionally, a message will show up in the event log:

    Event Type:     Error

    Event Source:  SideBySide

    Event Category:          None

    Event ID:        59

    Date:               5/23/2007

    Time:               10:49:44 AM

    User:                N/A

    Computer:       COMPUTERNAME

    Description:

Generate Activation Context failed for C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\Deployment\XOZH4M45.EVY\P6ED1JBC.21Z\GT2YQEBH.VQV\8J2XDV5X.LJA.manifest. Reference error message: The operation completed successfully.

    .

COMPUTERNAME and USERNAME are placeholders, but you get the idea.

As you might imagine, this doesn't help me at all. Has anyone seen this? I have checked:

    Internet Explorer security settings

    MIME types on the client

    Application manifest issues

    Required prerequisites

I'm not sure where to go from here. Has anyone seen this?

Microsoft Support suggested switching the user's profile. That didn't work either, so they're going to rebuild the machine. It's not the preferred method, obviously.

I was getting a similar problem (same error message but with different files...and there was an Error 32 in the Event Log as well)

Installing the VC++ redistributable package solved my problems, perhaps it will do the same for you

I have the same problem with a VS Basic 2008 program I'm trying to deploy.

I tried installing the VC++ VS2005 redistributale, and it didn't make any difference.  I still get the same message as the one stated in the opening post.

You may want to try Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86):
