Opening Local Drive Defaults to "Search" Option.
Windows XP- Service Pack 2- HP Pavillion
C:= Hard Drive
D:= Recovery
E:= CD, DVD Writer
F:= CD Player
The problem I am having is that when I double click or even right click on any drive icon up pops the window that calls itself "Search Results" and asks me what I would like to search for. This even happens for my local disk (in my case the "C:" drive). What I want it to do when I double click my local C: drive is to open it and show me the folders that are on the drive so that I can open one of them. The only way I can get to the folders on my hard drive right now is to alternate select and bring up the context menu, surf down to "Properties" and select "Explore" which brings up Windows Explorer and I can then see the folders on my Hard Drive. Also when I do this but instead of choosing "Explore" I choose "Open" nothing opens but instead I see on my desktop a flash of what looks like a black DOS screen opening and closing so fast that I can't tell what it was. Hopefully someone knows what might be causing this problem and can help me with it. I would just like the drive to open and show me the files inside when I double click on the drive icons.
Thank You,

My problem is that when I double click on my drive(s) a pop window appears for selecting a program to open with.
I can only see the folders when I select explore the drive(s).- Proposed As Answer byjass desi Thursday, August 06, 2009 8:59 AM
Using the run option, run regedit, then find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
on the key listed on the right side left click, select modify, and type none in the value data box, this might work.
also try running regsvr32 /i shell32.dll using the run option

- I also have this issue, but it looks like a virus that I got from a Flash Disk.
Even if I try & change the default to open with in Folder options, I cant find a "open" or an "explore option.
The virus has been cleaned, but still no luck. any ideas? I have this problem too!!! Have you managed to find a way to stop the 'search results' folder opening. I am going insane with this problem
- you are true but some doesn't work fom example in the shell i change in directory and in the driver "not drivers be carefully" it doesn't work but i make in the same mode
Using the run option, run regedit, then find HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\driver\shell\open
right click on it and found permission . will apear security box and click the first Administrators (Xxxx\Administrators)
Xxxx - name of computer
and in the box of permissions of administrators click deny to full control and read , press apply and ok
if it doesn,t work restart the computer
it realy work the virus changed the permision and i delete it with the profile of computer check yor computer from the virus
with caspersky Look for an "autorun.inf" file in the root of C. it was the remnant of a virus that caused the same symptoms here.

To add to the above post, keep in mind you have to unhide system files in Folder Options to show autorun.inf

Ok, Have found how to eradicate it properly, but forgot to post it here.
This site explains it the best: http://www.thejackol.com/2007/09/10/removing-the-ntde1ectcom-and-autoruninf/
This virus also stops you from viewing your hidden files, leaving you to use good old Command prompt to sort it out.
A virus changed my drive folder options. Open and Explore have been eliminated, replaced by symbols. When I click on either, I get an "open with" pop up window. I can't find a way to get into the drives to even make a backup of critical files.
Is there a fix for this? Will a repair installation of Windows XP repair the problem?
Any help will be appricated.

Hi
The best would be to find a propper Anti Virus. I have used Kaspersky as a trial & it erradicates & fixes the virus & ur folder options. If all else fails, back up all ur files. Do a Full formay & not a quick Format & reinstall.
It sucks but it works. The virus gets transferred via removable storage. So Scan everything before moving any data.

Just open command prompt. Please follow the steps which i provide u now
In command prompt,
cd \ then enter
dir /ah then enter.You can see autorun.inf as a systemfiles hidden.
To view the contents of autorun.inf just use the command
type autorun.inf
then enter the following commands.
attrib -s -h -r autorun.inf Then enter
del /q /f autorun.inf Then enter
md autorun.inf Then enter
attrib +s +h +r autorun.inf Then enter
Please follow these steps in other partitions.
Then logoff the operating system.then logon. Now U can access easily local drives without open with options.
