Hello
I have trouble with EW4 not responding a well. Almost every time I edit some of my files, it freezes and takes several minutes to upload the file to the server. That is really anoying!
The site is W3C validated and I built it from scratch using html and css with no strange or outdated code in it, as far as I know. You'll find a sitemap at the bottom of the homepage. The site has 65 pages which I consider not too big, am I right?

I've read the threads with similar issues, but couldn't find a solution.
Hagen
PS: I 've tried to use links, but my account is obviousely not verified yet!?

No, actually, there is no "verification" process. If you can post, you can create links. There is a description of the process here: "How to Create Working Link in Forum" thread.
I have looked at your site (thanks for providing the link!), and have found no obvious cause for the problem you are describing. If I understand correctly, the freeze occurs when you are publishing, correct? Or is it even happening while just editing and saving files?
I wonder... you have some pretty large images in that slide show on the home page. Cumulatively, they could take some time to upload. OTOH, once published the first time, they would not affect subsequent publishing operations. Does this happen consistently, or only on certain pages?
cheers,

Can you clarify what is happening?
You say it is freezing while editing, then you say it takes a long time to upload the file. Those are two different operations and if EW freezes, I'm having trouble figuring out how you are then able to try to to upload the file. Do you mean there is a long delay while editing? Or did you mean only there is a delay in uploading the files?
Also, can you give an example: link to a specific page you had trouble with?

Hi Kathy, Hi Cheryl, Hi Scott
Thanks for your quick response.
To clarify my problem: The freezing and -not responding- occurs only when I try to upload the file not while I'm editing. It happens mostly with my default.master file but also with my home.aspx file (http://www.hagen-pflueger.com/home.aspx)
Just to open the home.aspx file takes often a considerable amount of time: 1-2 minutes.
I upload by clicking the upload-button.
Is it possible that the URL's in my navigation are causing the problem?

Scott: I followed your description of how to insert links, but again I get the error message: "Bodytext cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account." What does that mean?

The way the links are written certainly doesn't help any, but the biggest problem is that you have thrown everthing but the kitchen sink into that page. There are 8 style sheets, 16 javascripts, a slider gallery full of photos that haven't been optimized for the web and a bunch of needless CSS3 stylings that aren't universally recognized.
I have tried 4 times to open the home page in Firefox 15, but it just will not open. The last time, I stopped it at 7 minutes; the slider gallery never finishes loading in FF. The page loads a little slowly in Opera, Safari, and Chrome, very slowly in IE 9 (and then crashes IE 9 if I open a second page in a new tab).
That page is just too big--3.5 MB. You should really let your visitors choose whether to run the slider gallery. If I were on a mobile device and paying by the MB, I'd resent being forced to accept that download (and tie the device up for that long at 3G or 4G speeds).
Also, there are spaces in some file names (the %20 in Lighthouse%20Park.jpg, for instance) that may cause some problems.
So, I'm not sure which exact part of the page is the real culprit--the slider gallery is certainly a problem. Other pages work fine, but none of them with the slider gallery will load in FF. Try disabling a lot of the scripts and add them back one by one and see if that's the problem. I'd get rid of a lot of those scripts.

Hi Bill
I was thinking about the kitchen sink, but I didn't know how... Just kidding.
Thank you for your time and tips. I'm not a pro and I will certainly take on your suggestions.
Although I am unable to reproduce your problems with load times or the slideshow. I regularly empty my cache and test the pages in all browsers you mentioned. Even on different computers in different cities. Everything works like a charm, in all browsers. Is that probably related to the network speed?
Mobile users getting redirected to my Blog. That shouldn't be a problem at all.
My css is a mess there is no excuse for it. Like I said, I will take on your suggestions and try to fix it.
I used irfanview for the image optimization. Any better free software you could recommend?

No, Irfanview is fine; I've used it myself (don't like the interface but the batch processing is very handy). The image quality it produces is great (nice photos, by the way).
And now that I look at the site again, it seems that you have re-optimized the photos to be much smaller (and fixed the spaces in the names). Pretty sneaky--and fast! ;-)
Interesting--It now loads in Firefox, but only if I enter www.hagen-pflueger.com if i put your second link in: http://www.hagen-pflueger.com/home.aspx, it never finishes loading. Weird.

Sneaky and fast - that's what my wife always says about me.
So, I'm not finished yet, but the problem is almost solved. Every upload does now happen within seconds.
I still need to clean up my CSS and I probably need to start a new thread for getting help with the script issue.
Thank you very much for now. I really appreciate it!
Hagen
