    Hi,

Just was wondering when the RTM version of the WCF and WPF Studio 2005 extensions will be released.  It looks like the WWF extensions are RTMed already.

    Thanks
    Andy

    Andy,

The November CTP of Cider is the final release of the Visual Studio 2005 Extensions for .Net Framework 3.0.  It is compatible with the RTM release of the .Net Framework 3.0, which includes WPF.

From this point forward Cider will only be released as a part of Visual Studio "Orcas".

So are you saying there will be no RTM VS 2005 Extensions for .NET 3.0?

    Thanks

Correct.  Visual Studio "Orcas" is going to be the release for developing .NET 3.0 applications.

This is quite shocking news for me, since I won't wait longer for another RTM of Orcas only to get the RTM of Cider.

The Cider will be included in Visual Studio Orcas? The integration of Cider and Expression is still buggy, though. Cider keeps telling the XAML generated from Expression is wrong. This can be seen after I use Expression to create a simple animation and then I opened in Cider just to see wrinkles in my XAML.

When will this bug be fixed?

What you see in the XAML in this case is a limitation of the XAML Schema that's being used by the Visual Studio XML Language Service (which is what Cider currently uses in its XAML editing pane).  It will eventually be replaced by a real XAML Language Service, which won't be based on the XAML Schema.

And just to be clear, Cider is still far away from RTM, so a lot of things will change and improve.  It will RTM as part of Visual Studio "Orcas".  There just won't be another CTP for Visual Studio 2005.

I hope this clears up the confusion.

    That sucks!

But I understand, a lot of WPF functionality and WinForm compatibility to cover not to mention control/component vendor intergation.

Maybe you guys should consider announcing something like this!

To be fair, this was announced in our November CTP post here:

This November CTP is the last planned release of Cider as an extension to Visual Studio 2005. Future CTPs of Cider will be available in the preview releases of the next full version of Visual Studio which is currently code named "Orcas".

This is rather bogus!  I mean, releasing the 3.0 framework with wcf, wpf etc. etc. but saying... sorry... Cant use it (In a true production environment.  The runtimes are RTM, but the IDE's are not....

    Bogus.

<thinking that somebody that's not from microsoft probably needs to say this, so *I* will...>

You can *use* it in a production environment; but you can't develop it in a production environment. In my experience, not much development gets done in production environments, so that's probably ok. ;-)

The orcas ctp works fine for relatively straightforward formsy kinds of things, right now. It's not significantly less capable that corresponding .net Forms editors; and it's significantly more capable in many many ways. I'm guessing that -- even when orcas finally ships -- professional developers who are using xaml heavily will spend a significant amount of time editing xaml in text mode, in much the same way that html developers do now.

I've been working with the ctp tools for quite a while (since about August or so). It's a bit dissapointing that the tools aren't in better shape today (and a serious disappointment that the Expression CTPs seems to have gotten temporarily worse not better). But the tools are definitely usable, right now.
