I'm trying to install Visual Studio 2005 on windows vista (december beta). When the installer tries to copy the temporary files to start the installation, I get an error that says that the \vs\Setup\Rmt9x.mst file cannot be copied. I have already installed this copy of Visual Studio in Windows XP and it worked perfectly.

yay. copied the VS2003 disc1  directory tree to the harddrive and rmt9x.mst magically appeared. Same as the guy above. I wonder what gives.

I've just switched back to windows xp. I reinstalled Visual Studio 2005 without getting any error. The \vs\Setup\Rmt9x.mst file is in the Vs2005 DVD and nothing seems to be wrong with it. I just don't understand why I can't install Vs2005 on windows vista.

What build of Vista are you trying to install VS on?

I get the same problem. When I try to install VS2003 on Vista Beta 2, I get "cannot copy Rmt9x.mst..." error. This after I had to stop "windows defender" from starting up or else I had 2 setup.exe instances loaded and VS would not even start to install.

Have you tried copying the layout to your harddrive and installing from there?  I'm wondering if the media might be bad (if a bad batch got sent out).

I get the same problem, too.

    but,

    >Have you tried copying the layout to your harddrive and installing from there?

    was successfully done.

    Vista protected copying rmt9x.mst from setup.exe ?

Do you mean you tried copying it over but windows stopped you form copying over the rmt9x.mst file?

We tried to reproduce this on the same Vista build and it worked on our machines.

For me, the Rmt9x.mst file seems to be alright. I succesfully copied it to the hard drive. Also, I just installed Visual Studio on Windows Xp. That sugests me that there is no problem with the media. The problem seems to be related to Windows Vista.

Not sure if there's anything else you can try.

Do you have access to a newer Vista build?

Same problem here... It is definitly not a bad file problem. Other things I've tried... logging on as the built in administrator and disabling every Defender, UAP and security setting I could find.

I'm running Vista 32 Bit (newer build than 5270, but don't think I'm allowed to say which build)

Next Day... Well, I thought I'd try VS 2005 on Vista again (it has a similar install problem, but with 'gencomp.dll'). While all the above security was still disabled, I copied the DVD to a hard drive and installed from there. It worked fine. Same was not true for VS .net however. Still haven't gotten it to install on Vista.

    same thing happens to me.

Vista Build 5270 and VS 2003 .NET Architect. I'm going to try and copy the file off another PC and see if it works.

(btw, i'm posting from firefox because IE 7 restarts after logging in to Passport. ;) )

I have the same problem with the final version of Vista Business (VLK).

I never got "Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel for Windows XP" to work on any build of Vista, so I didn't try it with the final version. I had previously used Virtual Clone Drive 5.1.4.5 (that's my favorite mounter - double click the ISO and go!), but although it appears to work for SOME software on Vista, e.g. I was able to install Office 2007 Enterprise Edition, it must have some bugs with Vista because I could NOT install Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Developers. I got the error you describe here. I tried MountISO also with the same problem. I also tried copying the ISO locally and tried manually copying all the files from the ISO and had the same problem. So I stumbled across this link (http://www.mohundro.com/blog/PermaLink,guid,865fcaca-d9e4-4bba-a92f-32a68685a9c3.aspx) and gave it a try. After uninstalling Virtual Clone Drive I rebooted for kicks and then installed Daemon Tools V4.08HE (32-bit). Be sure to UNCHECK the Search Tools option to avoid the spyware (unless you WANT the spyware ;-).

Anyway, it seems to work - it got past the point where the others were failing and VS.NET 2005 is installing now.

    Hi,

Thanks for all your solutions. I got the basic idea of how to go forward.

I was getting the same error ( " cannot copy Rmt9x.mst file " while copying the files to temp folder. I rectified it by copying the 'setup' folder' to my local and re-running the setup.exe from local itself.

Now to install the application fully, i ran the setup from the DVD / network but after few intital steps, got 1316 : network error stating can't find vs_setup.msi.. .

From here one there are two approaches, "either locate the missing file in DVD/network, copy it in windows installer and click on re-try" or "copy the full visual studio installtion package into local (e.g. CBig Smilerive) and re-run the setup".

I followed the later and got my VS 2005 successfully installed.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Praful

Here's my experience so far on Vista:

    1. You can't use XP Virtual CD Control Panel from Microsoft - it just doesn't work on Vista

    2. Virtual Clone Drive 5.1.4.5 works really well on most ISOs from MSDN. I love that you can double click an ISO to mount it. However, it does NOT work with VSTS 2005 Developer Edition (as noted above). I haven't tried copying the contents and then installing, but installing directly from the mounted image using this tool does not work. Also, if you are using Vista x64, I don't there is a 64-bit version.

    3. Daemon Tools (sorry i don't recall the version #) worked on the VSTS 2005 image, but when I went to install Office 2007 with a full install it did not work... also, you need to remember not to install the adware (unless you want it). So unfortunately Daemon Tools doesn't cover eveything either.

    4. MagicDisk (from MagicISO) is also free and has a 32-bit and 64-bit version. I used build 77. I was able to install VSTS 2005 as well as Office 2007 directly from the mounted images. It would be great if it had a double-click on an ISO feature like Virtual Clone Drive, but hey, even Daemon Tools doesn't have that. The one problem I ran into with MagicDisk is that the first time I used it was on a Vista machine with Roxio and the next book I had the Black Screen of Death -- a black screen with a mouse cursor forever. I had to reboot in safe mode and uninstall MagicDisk. But if Roxio is not installed, it works great, and seems to solve the issues that Virtual Clone Drive and Daemon Tools have.
