AnswerUpgrading from TFS2005 to TFS2008 failed

I'm trying to upgrade a single server TFS 2005 to TFS2008, I followed the installation to upgrade, the installer was non-responding when upgarding the database for over 12 hours. Then I open sql profiler to check sql server activity, nothing was processing by the sql server, and I stopped the installer and rollback to TFS2005 finally.

How long would it take for the upgrade process for a 20gb database? and it my situation normal?

We've identified a problem that some customers are encountering during the team build portion of the upgrade.  We have identified a fix and are currently testing the fix.  Please contact Customer Support for this issue.  It's currently be tracked under Escalation ID:  372448.

I finally got it fixed! My hunch about the FQDN change was correct. I had to open the TFS database, tfsIntegration, tbl_registration_extended_attributes. Change the value of ATMachineName from 'tfs.mysite.com' back to 'web06'. After I saved that change, the installer took off and installed as intended.

I hope this information helps someone else!

    Barry -

No, it should not take that long.  I'd reccomend trying again with the machine(s) freshly rebooted, and no TFS or SQL connections active.

If you still have problems, please post your log files (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2094165&SiteID=1)

It still does not work after rebooted.

Refer to the log file, the last line is "Starting execution of steps from step06_MigrateOpenedWorkItems.sql.resources", and then it stopped for long time without any progresses.

It seems that I counter the same problem.  I have single server team foundation server 2005 , sql 2000 & 2005, shrepoint 2 . When i try to upgrade it to TFS 2008 the installer can't recognize any exist database . It's the second step in installation . I really don't know the reason . Please help me

I'm having the same issue here. At first I thought that it was because I change my TFS to use a FQDN (i.e. change from 'web06' to 'tfs.mysite.com'.  So I manually backed out the FQDN settings from the database. It looks like they were all on tfs_service_interface. I'm currently at the point that all the settings were all reset back to 'web06'. Now when the installer tried to detect the database I receive an error"

"Setup has detected that the specified database server is already in use by another Team Foundation Server (services) computer. Click OK to configure this computer as a stand-by Team Foundation Server (services) computer. Click Cancel to specify a different database server."

I'm stuck at the point. This is the one and only TFS server and database at the company, so I know it is not already in use. Also, I did uninstall TFS2005 prior to installing TFS2008.

Any help is appreciated! Right now, I dead in the water with NO Team foundation server at all. If I can't get 2008 working within the next 24 hours, I need to at least get 2005 back up and running.

    Thanks,

    -Steve

I can  add a small note that may causes the problem. I've changed the IP address of the application and data tiers in my TFS.Is that can affect TFS ?

    Hi CRathjen,

I found your reply from the 'Team Foundation server setup' forum.  We encounter the exact same problem:  The TFS2008 upgrade appears to be stalled during TFSBuild portion and the log file indicates that it is 'Starting execution of steps from step06_MigrateOpenedWorkItems.sql.resources'.  tempdb transaction log has grown tremendously from ~700K to more than 100GB now.

Can you please give me any direction?

    Thanks

    Conard

    Hi Chris,

I have the same issue during TFS 2005-2008 upgrade.

The last line is "Starting execution of steps from step06_MigrateOpenedWorkItems.sql.resources", and no more activites.

    Is hotfix update available?

     Proposed Answer

To avoid issue with hang after  "Starting execution of steps from step06_MigrateOpenedWorkItems.sql.resources",

Buck Hodges suggested to install combined TFS 2008+SP1 setup as described in http://www.woodwardweb.com/vsts/creating_a_tfs.html and in the latest Team Foundation Installation Guide.

This approach allowed me to finish install(after fixing issues described in http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3912734&SiteID=1&mode=1).
