AnswerSQL Server Management Studio 2008 - intellisense

Hi, I installed SQL Server Management Studio 2008 Enterprise but the intellisense is not working. I enabled it but still doesn't work. I'm using management studio 2008 to connect to SQL Server 2000 databases on the network.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    T

Intellisense does not work on down-version systems. Sorry about that!

Are there any thoughts of creating an add-on for down-version systems? This would be very helpful and appreciated.

    Thanks

If you want a change request or report a defect in the product, we have a site designed especially for that. You can report issues, get feedback and even vote on changes for the tools. The advantage is that when you enter the information here it goes directly into our defect-tracking system. You can find this tool at:

Hi, Buck! I was wondering the same thing as the original poster.

So I if obtain SQL Server 2008 RTM, install just SSMS on my laptop, and then use my laptop to connect to my SQL Server 2005 servers, I won't get the intellisense feature? Bummer.

There's no way the company I'm working with is going to convert to 2K8 anytime soon, yet there's nothing preventing me from installing SSMS 2K8 on my laptop.

Guys, if you wait until MS fix their bugs you all be at least 100 yrs old Smile
I'm using Red Gate SQL Prompt plug-in and pretty happy with it... just google it and download (but it's pretty expensive - about $200-$300 depends on version).

Aww this stinks.  At the official SQL Server 2008 "launch" party I went to (I say "launch" since the party was before launch happened) they told all of us there that intellisense would work on older SQL databases and the crowd went wild.  This is so dissappointing that they either changed their minds or gave us bad information.

It worked with 2005 in a version prior to RTM. The install hosed Management Studio for 2005 and I had to reinstall to be able to create tables and such. Hopefully support for 2005 will come in the first service pack.

I can't fathom why a feature which works in SSMS 2005 while pointing to a 2005 database, such as  parentheses pairing/highlighting would NO LONGER WORK when using SSMS 2008 pointing to a 2005 database.  This forces many of us to install and use SSMS 2008 AND SSMS 2005 to enable us to working effectively on 2008 and 2005 boxes respectively.  Perhaps rolling all relatively intelligent features (e.g. bracket pairing) into the intellisense module for SSMS 2008 was not a client-friendly move.  Surely you didn't think all of MSSQL clients would upgrade-in-place all of their SQL servers?  You virtually guarantee and all-or-nothing approach to adopting SQL 2008.  You should have learned by now that too many of us, when faced with such a stark choice, will choose "nothing" and begin flirting more amorously with alternatives, like that seductively slender MySQL, you see her over there...wearing that red hat.

    Rookie move Microsoft.

Intellisense would be nice to feature to have with 2005, the lack of is not reason enough to even consider MySQL as an option. I've used MySQL before and it is a joke compared to MSSQL.

Sure MS SQL is better than MySQL, but anyway it's not only option...

Probably, these links will be helpful to compare different SQL servers:

Yes joke is the operative term.  I was using a rhetorical flourish to make the point that taking away already existing features for one release back is an incredibly stupid or venal move.

I agree with the parentheses pairing and highlighting is something in SQL 2005 Management Studio I had taken for granted..
and to find this feature only available in SSMS 2008 when pointing to a SQL 2008 is very annoying that something so simple has been overlooked.
This little feature does mean I will still use SSMS 2005 until this is fixed, or I can exclusively develop on SQL 2005 (which isn't going to happen soon - when we are still supporting and developing against SQL 2000).

This is annoying. Intellisense worked with 2005 in the 2008 CTP (Katmai). Shame on M$ for teasing us with the CTP then removing this feature!!!

    Big Bummer!

I've been using the sql 2008 CTP editon for almost an year and completely used to intellisense.

Just installed the release version client tools and now the feature is gone.

My clients have no plans at all to upgrade from sql 2005.

I might have to look at Red Gate's client tool. How is the intellisense feature in that product?

I have also been using the 2008 CTP until a few days ago when it expired and refused to run anymore. I had to install the release 2008 version of the tools and thought something was wrong when intellisense wouldn't work anymore. Now I know that Microsoft just screwed us over. I can't imagine why they would have taken that feature out! Sure, it was a little buggy in the CTP, but it was worth dealing with the bugs for the increased productivity.

I don't know much about Red Gate's intellisense tool, but a previous poster said it runs around $200 - $300. Maybe they have a trial version so you can see if it's worth it...

Hands down, the Red-Gate  sql prompt 4.0 is probably the best intellisense tool i've seen.  I've been evaluating it for about a month.  It works across all sql2000+ and fairly fast.  I definitely think it's worth the price.  It also includes snippets manager, which very great tool as well once you customize it.
