SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio not found
I have installed the evaluation version of SQL Server. When i click on the Intelligence Development Studio link it starts looking for the file devenv.exe. The file is not on the pc. Repeated installation twice making sure that all components are selected. What is causing this file not to be available?

- Haris,You should make sure that Visual Studio is still installed. If you didn't previously have VS installed, the BI Dev Studio installation will install a VS shell called Visual Studio Premier Partner Edition. Look in Add or Remove Programs for an entry like this. If you don't find any entry for Visual Studio go to the location for SQL Server setup and run .\Tools\Setup\vs_setup.exe. This will install the VS Shell. After this is installed repair the BI Studio installation by running the following from the command line from the .\Tools directory: start /wait setup.exe /qb REINSTALL=SQL_WarehouseDevWorkbench REINSTALLMODE=OMUSBest of luck.

- Install Visual Studio 2005 if you haven't already.
Does this means that to run Business Intelligence Studio the Visual Studio must be installed?
If so should this installtation be done prior to installing SQL Server or as post installation step?
Why did microsoft did not mention this in the setup instructions?

Haris
- For visual studio was able to download and install visual basic 2005 express edition. The business intelligence studio still won't work. The system still reports the devenv.exe file as not available.
You might want to uninstall everything and install visual studio first and then SQL 2005 with BI. I had to do this on another machine and it worked for me.
From what I understand, BI Development Studio is an extension of Visual Studio. What happens is that you end up loading visual studio and selecting a Report project when you click on BI Dev Tool. The pain of getting it set up is worth it, trust me.
Best of luck

Dan Wonderful! It worked and the quick response is greatly appreciated.
Mega thanks,
- I was having a problem where our Visual Studio Professional installation seemed to be conflicting with the Business Intelligence Developer installation. If VSPro was installed first then the BI Dev install didn't seem to do anything. No BI projects appeared and no BI tools appeared.
If VSPro was installed after BI Dev then the BI projects appeared but the components in the Toolbox did not appear. Attempting to add any BI components in the Add Toobox Items dialog cause VS to crash.
The command you suggested above fixed everything. Thank you. I also installed SQL Server 2005 including BI Dev Studio before VS2005 Pro and found that some VS2005 project types were unavailable.
I attempted to follow these instructions, but got a dialog "Please go to the Control Panel to install and configure system components".
I submitted the command from \Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\Tools. Is this the correct location?
Thanks in advance, David
- I have Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition installed on XP, but have never installed the full VS. When I installed SQL2005 Standard I also had the problem with the BIDS installation. Following Dan Jones advice I found that I could just run the vs_setup.exe on the SQL2005 CD2. This seems to have installed the VS shell and fixed the BIDS installation, and VWD Express still works. It seems like BIDS does not integrate into VWD - which is fine, just a shame the installation does not seem to be aware of VWD.
Richard - Yes indeed! This should be in the standard docs. I had VC# Express installed, then tried to install SQL Server Express with Advanced Services, and got the "searching for devenv.exe" dialog when trying to open BI Dev Studio. Tried installing Evaluation edition, still no BI Dev. Uninstalling, reinstalling, nothing - until running vs_setup.exe then setup.exe. Thanks for the tip!
- Hi,
I've tried the steps posted by Dan Jones and can open the BIDS. However when I open it, VS2005 opens instead and there are only 2 templates for new projects. I dont find the other templates for creating new projects that should be present in BIDS . Could some one please tell me how to get the other new project templates??
Cheers
-kk Dan,
I used visual studio 9 (orcas) and SQL Server 2005. Met the same problem what Haris mentioned. While I took the steps you mentioned, showed up the business intelligence projects and hided the other projects (C#.NET, VB.NET, WPF and everything). Even I repaired the visual studio; nothing happened still Business intelligence projects only available. If anything I have missed for orcas?
Thanks in advance.
I was having trouble with BI dev studio. But after running vs_setup.exe i am able to use BI dev studio. Thank you very much.

Outstanding!
Many thanks for this, you've just saved me from a morning of frustration and ranting !!

- Uninstalling and Reinstalling them both worked for me but there's got to be a better way to go about this...
- This is excellent support from MS. Worked perfectly.
After all the $ I spent and the frustration I suffered, I seriously considered using Open Source software, instead of MS.
Thnk you, Dan Jones. I had installed visual studio and than sql express with advance service. But I unable to locate BID shortcut and even in Visual Studio it is not showing any option to create project for BI.
Plz tell me the steps which I need to perform or any software that I need to install.
Thank You
- Hey Dan!
You are the champ. Fixed my problem as well. Its been a pleasure!
Thanks.
Asad. Dan:
I seek your help in resolving an issue I have with installing BI Dev Studio.
I recently bought a new desktop. I installed the different programs in the following order:
1. Windows 2008 Server - 64-bit version
2. Microsoft Office 2008 Ultimate
3. Visual Studio 2008 Developer
4. SQL Server 2008 - 64-bit Enterprise Edition
All components but BI Dev Studio got installed. I've tried to add BI Dev Studio to the existing installation and it keeps failing.
From reading the threads, I see that BI Dev Studio may depend on some components of VS 2005 and since I never installed VS 2005 on this machine, that could be the reason for the failure.
Can you please let me know how I can install BI Dev Studio?
Thanks a lot.
Venki
Hi,
I could install BIDS with all the blogs and suggestions but I could not see any templates, its only showing blank solution when I try to create new project.
Saw a similar post in this forum but no resolution.
If anyone can help me to get all the project templates that would be great.
Thanks in advance...
~Suresh
- I am using the SQL Server 2005 Express Advanced edition. When I try to open SQL Server BI Development Studio, it is looking for devenv.exe. I tried to follow Dan's steps but I cannot locate vssetup.exe to install the Visual Studio 2005 shell. I can't seem to find this online either. What can I do?
