While creating Lookup columns can we filter the values, instead of showing all the items from the list using OOB

This looks as if it is a WSS 3.0 / MOSS 2007 question.

    Is it ?

Sorry for not elobroting the question.

We do not have any out of the box way of having this feature in 2007. Wanted to know any improvements has been taken in 2010 for this.

There is no setting for it when creating the Lookup column in 2010, but there are 2 features that may achieve this when combined:
    1) You can choose to customize your list forms with InfoPath 2010
    2) Upon doing so, InfoPath 2010 can now do parameterized (filtered) queries to SharePoint list data connections, which means you can pass a value to the data connection so that it only returns a filtered set instead of the whole set.  Using this for a lookup field may not work, so I'll go try it.  It may not work, because I may not be able to tell that lookup connection not to fire automatically when the form is opened.  You can do this with data connections you create, but I'm not sure that will be configurable on the lookup field.

Why not create a view and filter the columns? Was there any particular reason you werent able to create views?

I think creating filtered views would be the best option.

Filter which views?  He needs to filter the values that show up in his lookup columns when users are creating/editing list items in the destination list, I thought.

Not sure, I think the thread starter needs to elaborate more, may be with some examples on what he is trying to achieve.

In many scenarios we have parent child relationship concept in lists. Where child is having look up on parent list column. In this scenario when make new items in the child list (newform.aspx) we want to show only specific items from parent list instead of all the items.

Was wondering is there any improvements made in 2010 look up fields this can be achieve out of the box.
