I understand that alerts can't be configured for SharePoint groups. Is anyone aware of any free or very low cost (we are a non-profit organization) solutions for SharePoint 2010 such as this one that someone created for SharePoint 2007? Thanks!

    Hi,

We cannot use SharePoint groups as a destination for Alerts "out of the box" with SharePoint.  This would require a custom solution to create a new distribution list that is built from a SharePoint Group. We may use SharePoint Designer and create a workflow that send an email to SharePoint group.

Also, I found the solution for SharePoint 2010 here:

    Hope it helps.

Thanks Sally. Any experience with this? It seems to be lacking installation instructions, site hasn't been updated since last July, and the one poster indicates it broke their site. Ugh... do I risk it??

    Hi,

I tested on my computer and it could be installed. It is a .wsp file (solution package). We can deploy the file by similar instructions in this article:

    http://ashrafhossain.wordpress.com/2011/01/20/how-to-deploy-sharepoint-2010-solution-package-the-wsp-file/

Note: As this solution package is developed by a third-party company, not Microsoft, we cannot guarantee that it can work well on your computers. You’d better first test the solution package on a test enviroment. Thank you for your understanding.
