Federated search connector for Google

Question

Hi

I couldn't find a federated connector for Google. Microsoft has published a list of connectors, but it doesn't contain for Google. Here is the link for connectors: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepoint/ff727944.aspx

I tried building my own with query template url as :http://www.google.com?k={searchTerms}. But this didnot work. Looks like the feed returned does not meet the OpenSearch standard.

I tried the FLD file from the below link, but that seem to be using an internal proxy to convert the feed from Google. This one too didn't work for me.

Can Google be connected via Federated search? I have requirements to connect to Google Scholar, PubMed etc. How do I know if these support OpenSearch protocol?

Thanks for the reply. Google News is supported, no issues with that. You could see from the technet link in my post that Google News connector is available.

I have seen the code solution to connect to Google. I'm wondering if there's a way to support Google without code

Only no-code federated search option available with SharePoint search is "Opensearch" or Third Party Connectors.

Unfortunately (for consumers) I don't see Google supporting "opensearch" any time soon. OpenSearch was created by Amazon and its very promise is to enrich Content (product) Creator/Seller and Consumers, but doesn't offer much incentives to search market leader like Google which make most of their money by showing relevant ads with their search results. With Market lead in Global Search (somewhere around 85% share) they won't hand over the key to their kingdom without getting anything back from the other industry leader (something like Microsoft agree to put google as default search on every copy of Windows, which again seems very far fetched)
