Fields in a publishing page

Question

Hello,

I created a content type for a publishing page in which I have a field called contact email..now when this field displays on the page I want this field to be a hyperlink which acts as a mailto link so when the link is clicked it opens the default mail client...What I observed is that if I add the contact field of the page content type then all the links are automatically formatted as hyperlinks but when I remove the contact field from the page layout it becomes just plain text...Can someone please help me with this issue.
