I am planning on updating my SharePoint 2010 farm from RTM to SP1. I am reading a lot of information about this and I am just trying to get a final word on this.

Do I need to install SharePoint Foundation SP1 before I install SharePoint Server SP1 even though I do not have Foundation installed?

What is the best cumulative update to install to establish a baseline. I have read some good information about not installing a CU just because it is the latest and greatest out there, but some of this data is not current (last post is Dec 2011).

You shall install both SP1 at first for Foundation 2010 and then for Sharepoint 2010. Also if you have OfficeWebApps or Project Server you should install SP1 for those aswell. And same aplies for LanguagePacks if any used - you have to install Foundation LP and SP1 and then Server LP and SP1.

One last thing. I have a SP web server, SP DB server and a SP app server. Does the order of install matter? Can I do all three at the same time?

    Thank you,

You will need to start with your DB server so that your databases can be installed at the point of SharePoint configuration.  You can then add your app server assuming your Central Admin will be located here, configure as required then add your front end.
