Answered Enterprise Project Type (EPT): Project Site Template section only has Microsoft Project Site as an option

Hi, I'm fairly new when it comes to SharePoint (MOPS). I'm encountering an issue regarding the Project Site Template section of the Enterprise Project Type (EPT) page in the Server Settings.

First off - I would create a new blank site, give it a name, then do all my customizations to this site (this is not connected to any project). Afterwards, I would then go to: Site Actions | Site Settings | Save site as template. I would get an operation is successful page.

I would then verify if the solution is activated, which it was shown as active. To view this I would go the top level (PWA), then Site Actions | Site Settings | Solutions. I would even see the solution in the Solution Gallery (e.g. Site Actions | More Options).

The problem though is when I go to Server Settings | Enterprise Project Types | I'll choose a Enterprise Project Type from the list then scroll all the way down to the Project Site Template section. From that point, I do notice that only the default Microsoft Project Site template exists in the dropdown list but I do not see my site template.

If anyone has experienced this before or has any information to pass along on why this behavior is occuring then that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Hope my problem was discussed clearly.

I assume that you would like to create project site based on your template

After saving the site as template ,navigate to solution gallery, save your custom stp file locally

    Execute following command

stsadm –o addtemplate –filename “{location of STP file” –title “{custom template title}”

    Hi there,

Project Site templates in Project Server 2010 are now WSP files and should be activated and available without having to use the stsadm command that was used for Project Server 2007 Project Workspace template files (STP files). For guides on creating new Project Site templates please see:

My apologizes Paul for the duplicating post. I wasn't too sure where my question fit under which category. Do you know how to remove the other duplicate question?

So when I created "Template 1" it was defined as a new Blank Site and when I finished all my customizations to this template and then saved it as a template. The wsp file was created and activated. However it wouldn't be recognized in the dropdown list of Project Site Templates in the EPT page.

Yesterday, I did a test at the end of the day - This time I created a template called "Template 2" as a new Microsoft Project Site and when i did my customizations again to this template and then saved it as a template. The wsp was created and activated as well. However, this time it worked. EPT recognized this template and was listed in the dropdown box.

Which leads me to this question; If creating a template based off of a Blank Site shouldn't it still be able to be recognized as a template? Just as long as when you've completed all your customizations and choose "save site as a template". An elaboration between Blank Site vs. Microsoft Project Site, i suppose would be helpful.

Final words; the solution that worked for me is to define a site as a Microsoft Project Site then once finish up the customizations then save as a template. viola.

    Hi there,

Only valid Microsoft Project Site templates will appear in the drop down, the first template you create should always be created from the Microsoft Project Site template. Once you have created a new site and saved the site as a template (e.g. PSTemplate1), you could then use the PSTemplate1 site to create the next version of custom template (PSTemplate2 for example).

Glad to hear you have this sorted.

    Hope that helps.
