According to the info here, I can install this in a Windows 7 machine:

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010setup/thread/f03616a8-55e9-44b2-b26f-3c6bda5ce1f7

Paul, recommended following the steps here:

    http://www.dontpapanic.com/blog/?p=96

The very first thing he says; download the file here:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=166231

As soon as I try to open the 4.1MB file, I get the same error message; 'The update is not applicable to your computer'.

Can someone help me get this straightened out?

    Thanks everybody!

    Hello,

Although SharePoint is able to install on Windows 7 (developer supported) I would go about installing it on a Server 2008 platform. The installation is pretty straight forward and since that type of deployment is much more common, the support community will no doubt have more experienced hands to lend should a problem arise.

Try getting that KB fix installed through automatic updates instead.

Is your Windows 7 machine 64bit?

    Paul-

Yes, this is a 64-bit machine.

    Falcon-

How much work would be required to download and install Server 2008 Platform?  Do I install it on top of Windows 7?  Is there a charge?

Basically, I want to fiddle around with Excel Services and Access Services during the 180-day trial period.  I had SP Foundation installed before; uninstalled it yesterday because I found out that it does not support Excel Services and Access Services.  All I wanted to do was get a little more acquainted with these things.  I've used SP before, but not a whole lot.  I just wanted to get more comfortable with this technology, and push for some licenses so it can be installed at my firm, if I get pretty good at using it.  That's about it.

    Thanks for your input.

    Hi Ryan,

There are demo VHD's available which you could use.  There pretty ready to go if you're looking just to get familiar with aspects of the product.  I think they're pretty hefty in size though.

Also, you can use the Windows 2008 R2 trial http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/windows-server/2008-r2-trial.aspx

Windows Server 2008 is a pretty hefty download but they have a download manager that makes it reliable and easy to download. Server 2008 will be an easy install in comparison to what you are going through. As long as you have x64 machine, it's pretty straight forward. You do not install it on top of Windows 7. You burn the ISO to a DVD rom and boot off the DVD ROM and follow the prompts. Just like installing Windows 7 from scratch, only its Server 2008.

Also, the 180 trial version can be re-armed several times so you can get up to 240 days of trial..

Thanks, to both of you.  I'll try it, but probably won't get to it for a couple of days, as it sounds like it's going to be a bit of an undertaking.  No matter how hard I work, there's just not enough time in the day to do all that I want to do.
