The Site Directory is not be enhanced or maintained in 2010.   So if you want to maintain a list of sites in a large implementation, what are you to do?

I am thinking about using the property bag to store metadata about the site collection itself.   Does anyone have any thoughts positive or negative about this, its impact on migration to 2010 or otherwise?

Actually this is directly related to SP2007. I want to implement metadata using the property bags in SP2007 but I am concerned about A) Best Practices in SP2007, and B) Planning for future migration to SP2010

Yes, but it doesn't really meet our current needs in in its current incarnation.    I'm looking to extend it and leverage additional metadata associated with sites to enhance it.   Would it be an acceptable practice to save this meta data in the property bag for the web of a site directory?  Will this continue to be supported in 2010 and would any property bag properties be migrated as part of a SP2010 migration?
