Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site - Operation aborted
I know it's a known issue and there are few reasons for it; (here are some:

Just wanted to note, that there is something that seems to me as bug in IE DOM implementation that can cause it as well. In my application I have following code on the client side:
while (body && body.hasChildNodes()) {
var node = body.firstChild; // ... app logicbody.removeChild(node);
}
while body content is created by Response.Write on the server side (I write down context in <p>...</p> paragraphs sections ).
Occasionally I was getting "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site - Operation aborted" in IE. In Firefox it was never happen.
After some research I found that it was related to the fact that on the server side I was writing:
1) '<p>'
2) content
3) '</p>
so - sometimes on the client side the code was running while paragraph wasn't fully formed (e.g. only <p> was written).
In this case body.hasChildNodes() still returns true (bug #1) and body.removeChild(node) will cause "operation aborted" (bug #2).

I got the message only after I dl'd a microsoft update, I think it was security update for netframework sp2 and 3 I dl'd them the same day so I don't know for sure which one caused the problem on my end but after they were done I tried to log on and get to my msn but everytime I tried that thing poped up so i just went to the add and remove program thing and removed the updates and it worked fine after wards, It only did that on the my msn homepage.Hi!

The IE bug (currently in 7.x) occurs on our website on the reviews pages which have named anchor links to jump to the top of the page. The operation aborted error only occurs on pages when users click the top of page anchor, but the top of page is already visible in this case as there is very little body content. I can't easily check for conditional page height in the script, or do anything to output body content as its all from a CMS database snippets.

I am not a developer just a home user using IE7 with all updates. This error is driving me nuts.
Check your third party addons. Skype has addons in particular causes a slew of these errors (I just spent 2 hours trying to fix my code when in fact, it was Skype causing the IE problem). Try this:
Problem: Operation Aborted error in Internet Explorer
Solution: In IE, Click Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced Tab and then uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions"... after you uncheck that option, restart your browser and try to cause the error. If the error goes away, it was an add-on. Now, once you know it is an add-on you can reanble add-ons and then disable them one by one in Tools -> Manage Addons to find the offending culprit. Specifically in my case it was a Skype plugin was causing this problem (probably the one that parses for phone numbers... I suspect that it started to parse before the page was loaded and hit a unhandled null exception on the DOM, just my theory though

I just confirmed it was the skype plug-in. Looks like it has nothing to do (directly) with IE.
I just solved an issue with "Operation aborted" and "The window is busy" when closing IE7. Disabling the Windows Messenger addon resolved the problem. Glad I got a hit on this discussion.

It was skype that was causing the problem as when you mentioned it I then realised the error message was only coming up since I downloaded it! I did you lil test and voila...

- I was getting the same error... I disabled JavaScript and I was still getting the error... then I noticed the link to the page that was crashing was "[pagename].php#"... when I took the "#" out of the link, it fixed it.
The problem you are experiencing is due to a Skype add-on. To disable the add-on, go to Internet Explorer in Tools/Manage Add-ons. You need to disable any entries for Skype (there should be about 3 entries).
Skype will still work after you have disabled them,
I just started getting this problem today. I do not have the Skype add-on installed. Any other ideas? It is only happening when I browse to certain website, not all websites.
I also started having this problem today too and I also don't have Skype. It only seems to affect some sites.I tried bpell's solution (turning off third party and cheking) and it did not work for me. I also do not have skype and this has just started today! Haven't done any new updates for anything... I've tried looking online but this appears to be the only website I've come ascross with some helpful people on it.
Luckily, this message doesn't come up on every website I visit just some of them.

Whoa that is weird because all the sites I've been visitng are media sites too like justjared and perezhilton.
This annoying Error started this past week. I have done everything suggested in previous posts. Some sites are OK now, but not everything. These are sites that I have opened without a problem for years! Initially my New York Times site was affected. I deleted everything I could think of and, finally, I can open NYT site which has been my homepage, for goodness sakes, for five years! I cannot open many Blog sites that I have visited daily in the past.
Is anyone from Microsoft reading these posts? FRUSTRATED FRUSTRATED for the first time in ten years, I'm ready to toss Internet Explorer!
The error started for me today too. Switch to Firefox is the only solution since I can't get it fixed. Sigh.
- It seems like this IE error is occuring on all sites that contain the 'Site Meter' code... those with these websites can simply comment out that code, other than that people at home just browsing will have to wait till either Microsoft release a fix.

I was trying to access the exact same sites (consumerist and gizmodo, also of the gawker network). I also googled the nirmaltv site and had the same problem. Hopefully the problem is on their side and will be resolved soon.
No solution yet with disabling third party (or even Live Messenger) extensions.

I was able to get into the JustJared site but it said a line error but still was viewable. The PerezHilton site will not load at all. It was fine this morning. I did a Java applet upgrade this afternoon for Java6. Anyone else do that? I needed to upgrade Java for financial sites. This is bizarre but honestly, probably not a bad thing to stay off trash sites
Same for me. Just started today (Aug 1). Never had it before. I have not changed anything. I do not have Skype either.
It is mostly when viewing a "blog" website but I have had a regular one do it as well. Other sites are working fine.
This has to be something within Microsoft I would think since I have not made any changes to my computer and it started today. No new program. I did the updated a few days ago but if that were the cause, I would have seen this "operation aborted" sooner than today wouldn't I?

Since my problems with this just started today for no reason (no changes to my computer or any program downloads) I am assuming it's a Microsoft issue and HOPE they are aware of it and are working on it.
That solution on their site is geared more towards developers I believe. The people that write the code for the websites. We just want our browsers to show the pages...not write the codes. So disregard that "fix" for this problem (or so, that is what I get from it).

Same here. I don't have skype. I'm running IE7 on Vista Ultimate SP1. This strange alert never happened before today August 1st, 2008 (ok.. it just became August 2nd.) It only seems to happen on blogger or gossip sites (not that I would ever waste valuable time ramdomly visiting such sites).
I can see the web site beneath the alert box - the page has been rendered. When I click OK on the alert, then the site closes and the browser displays a generic "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message.
Someone figure this new bug out. It's probably a virus disseminated by a religious group (based on the sites it won't allow to display).
I have a MAC and a PC. My mac (dumb Safari) is working perfect. Firefox works on it too. I think it is just IE. It started for me about 1hr ago. ANNOYING!!!!!!!! I will download Firefox. Follow These Steps Exactly:
Open Internet Explorer.
Click on the menu Tools -> Internet Options.
Click on the tab Security.
Click on the icon Restricted Sites.
Click on the button Sites.
Under Add this website to the zone:
Type the text ‘ *.sitemeter.com ’ (with asterisk and dot & without the quotes).
Click the Add button. Click Close. Click OK.All sites will work again without error messages coming up.

the restricted zones fix works. Quite funny if you think about it. I guess sitemeter have some work to do before their customer's look for a sitemetering tool that doesn't kill their websites - LOL

Thanks so much you clever person I had been getting the error message all morning and it was so annoying.
Last night I cleared all my temp internet files, cookies, etc and did a java update (as I had been ignoring it for quite sometime). I rebooted my computer and it was still happening so I went to sleep.
But for some weird reason the sites are working for me today! If the message starts gain I will definitely try the new solution and report back here. good luck everyone!

Yes, thanks so much for figuring this out!!! I have a blog with a Sitemeter and that was the first time I realized there was a problem. Couldn't figure out why I could go to some blogs/sites and not others!!! Sitemeter!!! Hopefully they get their problem figured out as Sitemeter is a nice blog feature and I would hate to be without it.
Oh, I'm soooo relieved! LOL! Thanks again!!I had the same problem on August 1st.,2008 on several IE7 web sites immediately after installing the Java Version 6 Update 7. After I went to Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs) and removed the update, all the sites that were giving the error worked fine again. Conclusion: problem with the Java update.
I need to subscribe to this thread, so I'm posting something here.
I posted my issue on this at: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/showpost.aspx?postid=3698045&siteid=17 . It appears it's SM related, but there is at least one site I've found so far that does not have the SM code on it, that's giving the error message PopUp.
Without making any changes at all, the sites I could not view last night are now working. Whatever the bug was, it seems to have cleared up.

It was still going on today, I first noticed it about a hour or so ago when I started that thread. What concerns me, is even if it "cleared up", this is still also an SP3 problem. I don't know of anyone not on SP3 that was having the problem. My PC's that don't have SP3 on them did not have the problem.

Thanks it was my problem, I resolved with your help.- (1) Now what is odd about that, is I don't fall into that category! My SM codes are placed within the closing HTML tag, as with the WPW site as well. Something is strange here.

That same "thing" in SP3 could also be in Vista SP1. I was only seeing it on my XP SP3 PC, not on any of my XP SP2 PC's (all use IE6).

Thinking about this some more, those G services use JavaScript, and the perezhilton.com site is loaded with JS, among it, G Analytics & AdWords. How in the heck can SM and G services be related, other than JS????? Were both G and SM doing "testing" at the same exact time, and the same kind of "testing"? Can't be. The only logical explanation is that he had the SM code at his site, then removed it when he heard of this problem.

A few days back I asked the SM people about more info on this. This is his reply, (but he did not answer my question about the Perez Hilton website).
Thanks for writing. As you are aware, there was a significant problem with our SiteMeter code and IE 6/7 browsers Friday night and early Saturday morning. Now that we’ve fixed the problem and had a chance to catch our breath we wanted to take a few minutes and provide a more detailed explanation of what occurred.
For the past few weeks we have been assembling and testing our new servers systems which will support the new SiteMeter platform. During this process we have the following goals -
1 - Track all your sites traffic stats on the NEW system using the current SiteMeter code.
2 - The stats on the new system need to be consistent and as in line with the stats on the current system as possible.
3 - We want our stats, including the new Unique Visitor data we’ll be providing, to be the most accurate available.
4 - We want to have at least 30 days of recent data active on the new platform for each customer as well as all your archived data.
While researching some anomalies in the data being reported on the new system someone spotted a potential problem where certain browsers may not have been handling the SiteMeter image tag properly and under certain circumstances the browser could potentially create duplicate counts or perhaps not track the visit entirely. In an effort to address the potential problem a change was made in the JS Scripts.
Unfortunately this code was accidently pushed to the live system before it was thoroughly tested. As it turns out it triggered something in Microsoft’s IE 6/7 that caused the browser NOT to load certain pages. From what we’ve determined the problem seemed to occur when a javascript Sitemeter tag was not a direct child of the body tag of the document, such as if it were embedded in a table or a div element.
The change in code also prevented SiteMeter customers from getting to SiteMeter’s website or stats area if they were using IE 6/7 browsers.
This situation occurred Friday evening until Saturday morning at which point we rolled back the change and returned our services back to their normal fully functional state.
Sadly this situation required many of you to stay up late Friday night or get out of bed early Saturday morning to work on your websites. For this we sincerely apologize.
Please be assured we have remedied the situation that created this problem in the first place. We’ve added another layer of process approval before releasing code changes and we expect no future repeats of situations such as this.
Thanks for your patience and understanding and we look forward to seeing all of you on the new SiteMeter platform in the coming weeks.

I don't understand what Skype has to do with this because it was SiteMeter that was causing it. Unless when you use Skype you use some kind of webpage or interface that has the SiteMeter code in it.
BTW, SiteMeter told me that the Perez Hilton site did have their code on his page, and he did remove it when the problem surfaced. That's why I did not see it in the source code.

The error we're discussing only occurs when I visit Merlin Mann's 43Folders website.
43Folders will occasionally load successfully, which I find odd. This makes the SiteMeter fix a bit dubious--wouldn't SiteMeter cause the problem on every visit?
I'm not a developer or anything, just a normal web user trying to figure out why this error occurs.
Try disabling all the add-ins and then add them back one by one until you find the offending add-on (or not, then you can rule that theory out). It may not by Skype (though it's a usual offender). There are other addins that can cause problems also (like, the Messenger add-in from time to time).

No, it was not happening on every visit. Just now that site loaded fine for me (IE6 XP SP3). It's loaded with malware Cookies, which I guess could possibly cause some problems for some that may be using some kind of Cookie blocking privacy software. I see they have the SM code on the page now (if they previously removed it).

I'm not sure about the success some have had with disabling 3rd-party browser extensions and plugins. The SM code uses JavaScript (.js), and it could be that some JS-dependent extensions or plugins could exacerbate the problem. It could also have something to do with the JS version on the PC.

I'm not sure what all that has to do with the issue of webpages not loading due to the SiteMeter code.
Just a site note here, anyone using that type of code at their websites, where ever you see the text "marttag***" is supposed to be "smarttag***" (the "s" in it is preceded with a colon : which is the code for the icon with the s-shaped mouth for example), "Smart Tags" are PopUp tags that will be added to your webpage on which that code is placed. These tags can direct visitors AWAY from your website. There are certain targeted words on the page that will be underlined with a "squiggly line", and when these words are hovered, the clickable ad is displayed. Bad for sales sites because they will be ads for your competitors. So it's good to remove all that from your webpages, unless you WANT that to happen, but that first line should not be removed. It's ok if it is, but if it's not there some bots or code validation tools may not parse/spider the page properly. (BTW, all that code is in XHTML which will not work for an HTML webpage. Having XHTML in the head tag of an HTML page can totally break the bots' ability to spider the page).

You must mean it happens on the results pages if it's AdWords related, so that URL won't be any different.
Apparently this is a different matter since SiteMeter isn't involved.

FYI...I contacted the site developer of 43Folders.com. They fixed the problem. No idea how, but the issue was being caused by something on the developer's side of things.
Now my Google homepage is getting the error. On their Help Forum, a Google guy said they figured out a financial portfolio gadget was causing the problem and they're working on a fix. I removed the gadget and now I can hit my Google homepage just fine.
What a weird issue. Seems like there are many of us here struggling with the problem, but evidently there aren't enough people having this problem for anyone to be too concerned with fixing it.

Can you give me some information on the "gadget" you removed? I have a user who is getting an error on the google page as well and I'm sure it's got to do with some financial links he's running.

Deleted skype and computer fine now thanks everyone your all brilliant ronnie
Disabling the "Enable third party browser extensions" and the "skype" fixes didn't work for me.
Here's what did work for me though:
Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (tab), and clicked on the "Restore advanced settings" button, then closed IE and re-opened. No more annoying "operation aborted" error message.

This is apparently browser-specific. What browser are you all using? I see one mentioned FF3, are the rest of you using IE7? I'm using IE6 and I never saw any of this happen other than the well-publicly-documented SiteMeter problem. Once they fixed their JS issue, I haven't see the problem since.
just installed sp3 i restart my computer after insallation and you know how igoogle just had an update on the left hand side on your google homepage well thats when the error comes up when that little ....block.... banner of buttons.... what have you.... tries to appear.....

I am getting the same abort message for my igoogle page. Started last night after I had closed google on one of my tabs, containing stock quotes, weather gadget, movie listings, etc. I can't get onto igoogle to delete the stock quotes or reset to my main (first tab) page. I am using IE7.0.5730.13. I also downloaded and installed SP3 earlier this week.
Any thoughts?

I installed FF3, opened my igoogle page (on the financial tab), switched to my home tab, closed FF. I then opened IE7 and it opened to my igoogle home page without a glitch. If I click on the financial tab, I get the same error: Internet Explorer cannot open.....Operation aborted.
Since this tab opens in FF3 and not IE7, is there a setting in IE that will fix this? Probably ought to just use FF3...

This is a Google issue and Google is working on it.

crashing before you get a chance to do anything.

I was having the same problem but I fixed it not using the above said method. What I feels that the cause for this problem is that when you call a javascript method before window onload it gets crash.
So I did following changes:
window.onload = function(){
myJSfunction();
}
and it got fixed.

If you don't want to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, then the fix is to click on tools, internet options, then advanced tab, then check the box "use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections".

No, I'm using IE6 and I stopped having the problem as soon as SiteMeter fixed the code (that called to their server). I didn't have to change any settings at all. Anyone that's still having the problem is obviously experiencing a different problem than the original problem of this thread. Especially if a problem webpage doesn't have the SiteMeter code in it.
I had this error when i tried accessing msdn online and google.com... the solution i found was, just to click the "BACK" button. the site which was "operation aborted", will load perfectly

I do not have Skype. What is it? It is not what is causing my problem at all. I have never downloaded Skype, and did not know what it was until I looked it up. I have never been to the site, nor have I ever done anything about this add-on, and it does not exist in my add-ons.
In addition to this, for whatever reason, it appears that on some sites - specifically Hotmail - every time I try to change one of my other e-mails, a new window also pops up. It's very annoying.
It appears to me that since this is a very common, and irritating problem, Microsoft would put their ASAP on this!
Same problem here but in my case, was having problems with www.aircanada.com. My resolution was to remove an ad-block on google-analytics.com.
Do not believe user has Skype, which is also mentioned as an issue. She sent me screenshots of add-ins, 3 pages worth!
Have also unchecked "enable 3rd party add ons" in the advanced tab of options. Used cleanup for all cookies, tmp files, etc.
Does not happen all the time. And occasionally she just gets a blank frame after clicking on the link out to mapquest.
This is not happening with other user machines.
Any ideas would be humbly accepted. This thing is kicking my butt.

This has been happening off and on, but then clears, only today it has just started and I have tried every single 'fix' option on this thread and not one of them is working (sigh). The site I'm trying to view loads fine in Firefox, but not in IE7. Using Windows Vista Ultimate computer.
Any new thoughts welcome (though I may just give up and try tomorrow LOL)

Hi MissSkyline and other users. I've had this only kick in the last week or so. Its mainly on facebook apps - driving me crazy. I don't have skype as far as i know and am using ie7 with all latest MS updates. Please help me!!!
I also have a system that cannot access Air Canada, it once worked fine,
IE7 v7.0.5739.11, and still works on other PCs on the same subnet with that version of IE, have scanned with spybot, removed Skype, explicitly permitted google-analytics.com, restricted sitemeter, run without addins, removed all cookies/temps/etc etc etc.
I also installed Firefox and it gets farther along but also doesnt work right. I tried without firewall and with Mcafee on-access disabled.
I called AC about it and they were of no help
Surely there is a way to find out what the explicit error is? At least that would give a way to start looking.

If you're getting this problem it will therefore probably require the web-developer to make changes.You cannot circumvent it by just changing IE's settings. Or you can use a different browser.
I put this in to help developers whose pages are giving a similar problem.
Going back to my 2000 server my website works fine albeit extremly slow (hence the reason for the switch). But on server 2003 it has this issue, it has it in IE 7.x IE 6.x my old netscape browser and also firefox. So I do not believe it to be a browser issue at all and since it doesn't happen under windows 2000 server only under server 2003 it definitly is not a broswer issue.
As far a Java cause, I haven't changed the order of the pages in over two years, java remains exactly the same but now all of a sudden errors, but not on server 2000.
In addition I have done alot of my own troubleshooting for this issue. I built a third server (server 2003 with every single stinking update (all 5 million of them)) and have the same issue. in my event log i was getting a dcom error and the microsoft fix for that was to remove the latest service pack and reinstall it. Ouch After removeing the service pack the system is totally crashed thus the reason for the third server.
If anyone (on the server end of things) can figure this error out it would be great. I'm quickly losing my audience, went from over 25,000 unique users a day down to like 10,000. Myself and all the people at TVByDemand.com would greatly appreciate any help. I've about given up, with all the issues of running the server under windows I think we are either gonna switch over to Linux or just close the site. Seeing I do not know linux and neither does any of my people.
The part I can't figure out is why (how) micorsoft can expect people to ever upgrade to thier newest greatest thing when they can't get thier old thing to work right. I mean to upgrade from server 2000 to server 2003 means I have to rewrite my entire site, that is just plain ludicrise. I laso came to find out that they no longer support .net 1.x 2.x on server 2008. So I'm stuck that way as well.
They really need to take a step backwards and remember just how it is that they came to put novel out of the networking business. It appears to me that they are following the old novel model and soon they too will be out of business.

My issue was with Technet and adding it to the Trusted Sites zone corrected the issue.
From the article: "Users may also receive this error message if a Web page in a Trusted Sites Zone sends a HTTP 302 redirect to a page in the Internet Zone. With protected mode, Internet Explorer 7 and later versions that are running on Windows Vista or a later operating system prevent redirects from Web pages that run at medium integrity to Web pages that run at low integrity for security reasons. In these scenarios, users may receive a similar "Operation Aborted" error message. To resolve this issue, make sure that HTTP 302 redirects are for pages within the same zone. For example, make sure that a redirect is from one Trusted Sites Zone page to another Trusted Sites Zone page. Or, make sure that both the source and the destination of the redirect don't involve a change in Internet Explorer's protected mode status."

I had IE8/Vista on my laptop and the problem still exist. It really driving me nuts as it happen to my own blog!!..I tried removing the sitemeter gadget, still the same. Why it's only happen to IE??...now i cannot even access to my own blog using IE!!!

I am working with 3 different environments:
1. network = Windows 2000 Terminal, w/IE6
2. local workstation = XP Pro, w/sp3, w/IE7
3. home = MS Vista Ultimate, w/sp1, w/IE7
I have tried all of the suggestions. Disabling 3 party extensions, adding *.sitemeter.com, resetting IE (I even changed the default search provider to "bing" by MS [thinking it would shake hands better]). Each attempt initially appeared to work, only to try again and get the error. The only environment that has recovered and remains stable is the network. Older is better?
Just thought I would share my findings. Maybe it will help someone find a permanent solution.
