AnswerUninstalling DirectX

I have version 9.0b and I was trying to upgrade to 9.0c, but got an error during installation saying a required cabinet file cannot be trusted. At first I just thought this meant the file to install 9.0c was damaged so I got a new installer from here, but got the same error. So I figured there was a problem with the DirectX already installed on my computer. I went into DXDIAG and after only about 30 seconds it crashed my computer while it was scanning my DirectX files. After all this I've found that my current DirectX version is corrupted, and I cn't fix it by installing another version. I believe this is also preventing me from installin Windows XP SP2. I belive this also the cause of many other problems I have with RAM and Virtual Memomry availability to programs.

I don't have the time to reinstall my OS and I don't have a way to backup all my other files. My problem could be fixed by simply uninstalling DirectX so I can install a newer version. How can I do this?

Officially, you can't uninstall DirectX. It's a system component. There are some tools around on the web that claim to do it for you, but there's no guarantee that any of them get it right, and by using one you definitely put your system into a state where MS is unable to help you with any future problems and the only option is to reinstall the OS.

That said, I reckon the solution to your problem is going to be to perform a Repair install of your OS or a reinstall anyway, so... go nuts, I guess. Try the repair install on the XP disk first, and if it doesn't work, then try one of the tools from around the web. Be prepared to reinstall though.

Have you tried completing a windows update and making sure that your machine is up to date. Then use the latest Web installer to install the DirectX system.

I'm confident the problem is related to DirectX alone as I only get errors or crash when dealing with anything involving it. I've been able to install all other updates, but when I tried installing XP SP2 (which updates DirectX) the system crashes.
