Answered VOB to WMV Stutters

I have encoded a VOB file to WMV, however it stutters during playback.  By stuttering, I mean it looks like frames are missing or trying to catch up as the picture becomes slightly jerky.  This happens about every 20-30 seconds or so.

The VOB is a SD file 720x480 with AC3 5.1 sound.  I encoded it by selecting the WMV to Xbox 720p preset and then changed the bitrate to 3000, size to source (720x480), and matched the audio settings (48k, 384kbps, 16 bit).

I am streaming the file to my Xbox 360 and viewing it from the dashboard -> Video Library.  Any idea of how to remedy the problem?

Update: oddly, the file seems to stutter only when playing through the Xbox 360 dashboard Video Library, but when I stream it through WMC it does not...

Also, when encoding a 720x480 16:9 anamorphic source, is it better to force square pixels resulting in a 852x480 encode, or to keep the display as it's source (720x480)?

Last, I am confused on the "Text" feature regarding subtitles/captions in EE4.  I see I can import a .srt or .sub file which I have, but can this be hard coded to the video when outputing a WMV file or does it only apply to smooth stream?

    Thanks!

    Hi Shanndogg,

We already discussed a lot of those questions in your last thread (http://social.expression.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/encoder/thread/d14fe6ea-c76a-4815-808a-36d75de59cdb/#7ac21c2c-8c9b-4b0d-a40a-3fe28fbb99bd), so I'm going to comment only on the new issue.

Looks like your playback is related to an issue with the XBox360 player. I would contact the XBox360 team with the issue you are experiencing. Maybe the 360 player doesn't like non-square pixels and it may make more sense to use 852x480? At this point, this is not really something that me or my team have much control over and an XBox forum would be much more appropriate for that question.

Thanks, for the response I will try out square vs non-square to see if it remedies the situation and hit up the Xbox forum if needed.
