Screen Capture cannot record powerpoint or word

Question

I'm one of the students taking online courses from www.edx.org and I really like the way how they teach using screen captures of whatever they're doing. One of the best was from google on Power Searching With Google where the lecturer would show a powerpoint but in between he would switch seamlessly to the browser. the link is below

I wanted to do those kinds of videos so I searched around and decided on using expression 4 encoder trial.

I've tried recording the ppt slideshow but the screen capture just stops the moment I start the powerpoint show. It also stops whenever I open start typing in MS word.

Is there a reason why it does this? I want to switch between ppt show and whatever I'm doing on the screen
