Clicking on Record Closes Program

I am using Windows 7 Professional and just installed Expression Encoder 4.  I have tried numerous times to record the screen but when I reach the point to click on the red button to record, it closes down the program. I can select the screen area ok but that is as far as I can get.

I found the answer to this so no longer need help with this question.  I did not have Direct X 9.0.  Once I installed that, the program ran correctly.
