Design-time background

Question

What are best practices on setting a design-time background? I have a transparent background element that has black text...

If you go to Tools > Options > Workspace you can change from Expression dark to Expression light.  Although, the light can be right awful to look at. 

I usually just give my LayoutRoot a contrasting background color while designing and simply chage it back to none when I've completed setting up the control.

If we're talking about Blend, you can keep the "Dark" theme and just change your artboard background via Tools > Options > Artboard > Background > Color

Or you can plop Background="Color" on your parent panel like Christine pointed out for the instance.
