How to disable the random "updating source control status"

I keep getting the infamous "updating source control status" freeze up at random times during the day. It usually happens when I open a file for the first time, but sometimes it's just completely random.

I've seen one registry hack that was for an older VS version that said to change the AllowStatusUpdates from 1 to 0...but unfortunately it's already 0.

Does anyone know how to disable this?

Perforce in VS2005, how to version control source without sln/vcporj files in?

If it doesn't quite fit this forum, I say sorry first since I didn't find perforce official forum to discuss this, and then go here to find help.

I'm using perforce for my source control while VS2005 as IDE, and definitely I've installed p4scc for VS2005.
Perforce manages my all source files, header files, but no VC8 project file deposited there. I generated vc project file by another tool when I asked for it.

Then I got my problem. When I was trying to bind client source to server, it asked me for sln/vcproj files, if there's none in server, definitely not in my case, p4scc insisted for that, and tried to check in my local project file.

Here's warning messge

Automating the VSS Analyze Utility

We are decomissioning a server and I found an app called VisualBuild Pro that has scheduled tasks to analyze our VSS databases. We no longer have the media to install this software and to buy it new now is not in our budget.

So my question is how to automate the running of the VSS Analyze utility or something similar that would accomlish the same thing.

I have a solution with several projects (including setup projects) that I would like to have a common version that each of them takes. Is there a way to set it up so that if I change the version, all of the projects get it. Maybe a batch file or something?

Unable to check out the code files from Visual studio IDE which uses VSS, but at the same time I can check out files from VSS.

Iam not able to check out the files from VS 2005 which uses VSS as source safe and gettin error message as
"You do not have access right to $/....".

Where as I can check out the files from VSS IDE.
Is there some settings which Iam missing.

Cannot open solution after getting it from source safe

Hi All,

There is a problem when I get a solution from sourcesafe and try to open it first time.

When opening it the message comes that a certain project was not found and after that it asks for if the user wants to work in disconnected mode. And after that the solution is just not loaded.

The interesting thing is that there is no solution with the specified name in the sourcesafe and also the name of the project missing is like ProjectNameOpening with _1 at the end.

I have tried to open it again and again and have also repaired/reinstalled the sourcesafe but no use.

Can not access a mapped drive in Visual Studio 2008 (Vista 64)

I am unable to see mapped drives in Visual Studio 2008. I initially encountered this problem because Visual Studio could not find the VSS srcsafe.ini file on a mapped drive. If I run VSS 2005 it finds it fine. When I tried to open a project/solution, the file browser there also does not show any mapped drives. This is the case with both mapped network drives and when I mapped a drive to a shared local directory. I can browse the mapped drives without problem in Windows Explorer.
I am running Vista 64 and Windows Update has me up to date.

VSS auto detect file type not working correctly

Hi,
I have created a Database project from visual studio 2005 and added it to vss. All the .sql code files were added by using add existing items option in solution explorer. All files got added successfully, problem started when I tried to comapre two versions of added file. I got the message as "Binary files are different". I tried to change the file type to text and checked the differences but got difference in weired fashion (some special character "." between every two characters). I gone through MSDN and came to know that while auto detecting file type VSS searches for NUL characters ((bytes with value 0) in file and if it finds one it sets the file type to binary. Can you please tell me how to set some default setting which gives file type as text for all files while adding files through visual studio or how to check / remove NUL characters in code files.

I implemented the MSSCCI functions SccDirQueryInfo and SccDirDiff for our SCC provider. The functions are called as described in MSDN and as expected under VS2005 but we've been not able to trigger the calls under VS2008. Is there a way to execute SccDirQueryInfo and SccDirDiff under VS2008?

I am having the worst time finding info on simply adding a plugin or something for using source and version control. Getting Visual Source Safe is not straight forward, and doing searches gives me third party Source Control solutions that are not straight forward enough to decide on.

Coud someone not using Visual Studio Team Systems please let me know where I should go. I just need to use version and source control for mostly myself as I'm a team of one.

[MSSCCI] Confusion about extra subfolder when adding a remote VS project to the local solution

We're implementing a MSSCCI provider. Among other IDEs it should support VS2005/2008.
We observed a strange behavior of VS which seems to appear only with your provider (VSS6.0&VSS2005 behave different). So, following scenario: I work with VS2005. The open solution has a single project which was added to the SCC system before. Now, I invoke "Add Project From Source Control", select a folder in the SCC which contains the project files (csproj) e.g. /projects/solution/project1 and select a local folder c:\dev\prj1 . We pass those information back to VS with the return of SccGetProjPath. Then we got the following calls from VS:
SccOpenProject(with local path: c:\dev\prj1)
SccPopulateList(we invoke the callback for the project files in /projects/solution/project1)
SccGet(for the csproj.vspscc file)
SccQueryInfo (for csproj.vspscc file, returned status is "CONTROLLED")
SccCloseProject
SccOpenProject(local path is now c:\dev\prj1\project1) <= Why does VS change the local path?
... followed by some calls of SccGet and SccQueryInfo to get the files to c:\dev\prj1\project1
SccCloseProject
SccOpenProject(with local path: c:\dev\prj1)

So after the operation the files are under c:\dev\prj1\project1. We are very confused about the VS side change of the local path and the related extra Open/Close project. In VSS6.0/2005 the file are checked out directly to the selected local folder. Is there some option/capability to set/provide to avoid this behavior?

VS2008 Error when trying to add solution to VSS

SourceSafe 2005, VS 2008 and Win7 - Strange Check-in error Access Denied

I have the above configured and was working fine over the last few weeks. Now, in a certain web project, I can check out the project to include additional files to the project but when I go to check them into SourceSafe, I get the error message: Your source control provider encountered an access error. Do you want to switch to working offline in disconnected mode?

No permissions have changed on my SourceSafe database in quite some time (6-10 months). Thinking it was related to the project, I tried to rebuild the project. Well, things were going smooth until I tried to check in some files (after checking in 20-30 of them already successfully), and then I get the same error message again. What in the world is going on? If I answer No to the error, I then get the following message: The current source control operation cannot be completed. The source control plug-in returned the following error: Access failure.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? I do have SourceAnywhere Client installed as well so maybe that is conflicting with it but I doubt it since it has working before.

I have a project, and it needs different resource description for different build.

I think two methods but don't know those are right :

1. Use macro define.
2. Define another configuration.

But where can we decide the recourse for different use ?

I know TFS 2010 Basic is supposed to woo VSS 2005 users/adopters. The question remains: Will VS 2010 support VSS 2005, or must we use TFS in order to have seamless integration with source control in the VS IDE?

Let's say you create a new project, write some code and then add it to SourceSafe. Now from a computer that connects to the SourceSafe db via the internet plug in, how do you get that project? If you start up a new solution and add an existing project, you do get an "MS Visual SourceSafe" link over on the left side of the file open dialog, but it doesn't actually do anything. It won't let you enter the URL of your VSS database and browse for the project.

How can you add the project to the solution?

How do I deal with a reporting services SSRS project inside of Visual Source Safe, when each developer on the team might have different connection strings and different deployment URLs?

Some developers might be developing off their local SQL Server while others might be developing of a remote server. Some developers might be using the default SQL Server instance name, while others might be using a named instance.

The problem is that the connections strings and deployment URLs are embedded in project, which is in source control, which makes it hard for multiple developers to work on the SSRS reports.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

hi....im in big trouble...... one of my colleagues, while in de middle of our project in c# asp.net,lost some of the .cs files.....

so we thought of installing visual source safe 6.0 from vs6.0...... and add our projects in vs2005 in it .... so we created users and the database in it and added files in it ..... but while accessing the data through the source control in vs2005 an error message arises saying that there is no solution file in it ...... if the project was a windows version there would hav been a solution file in it by default.... but since it is in ASP... we do not hav a default solution file in the project created....

how do i solve this prob.....!!!!! plz help me....!!

Unable to add setup project

I have a VB 2005 solution that is in source control using SourceSafe 2005 the structure used that works is
Display Solution
----Display Project
----Display Deploy
Today I added a Display Deploy 64bit, and added crystalreportsredist2005_x64.msm and VS added the needed dependencies and I added the primary output from the Display Project. Compiles, installs and runs fine. I get an error when I try to check the solution or just the new 64 bit deploy project in.

First error is......

The project that you are attempting to add to source control may cause other source control users to have difficulty opening this solution or getting newer versions of it. To avoid this problem, add the project from a location below the binding root of the other source controlled projects in the solution.

If I click continue I get this....
The project C:\Documents and Settings\mvaughn\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Projects\Display Solution\Display Solution\Display Deploy 64bit\Display Deploy 64bit.vdproj cannot be added to source control. In folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Merge Modules, it overlaps a project that is already bound to source control at a lower root. To avoid this problem, add the project from a location below the binding root of the other source controlled projects in the solution.

Any help would be great!

Absolute VSS path for WebApplication project in solution file

I have a VS2005 solution containing both windows projects (Windows application and class libraries) as well as a .NET web service application

In the solution file, all the windows projects are neatly listed with no absolute VSS path information, like this:

If I delete the absolute path information from the solution file it automatically comes back when I do a save-all in VS2005. In the VS2005 source control bindings (the 'Change Source Control' dialog) the solution and all projects are bound to the same root in VSS as one block.

How can I get rid of the absolute path information in the solution file??

Hi all,

We have a source safe database that is hosted on an external server which we link to via VPN.

Whenever i open a solution using visual studio 2008, it is taking literally ages for the project to become usable. The files appear really quickly in the IDE window, but then I get a wait cursor, and an "Updating source control status" message at which point the IDE is fozen. It can literally take 30 mins for the projects to open completely, and become usable.

Then to add insult to injury, if i expand any of the project trees to see the actual files I get another 5 minutes of frozen IDE and the "Updating source control status" message again. Once I have expanded all the project tree's at least once, I can finally get some dev done, albeit around an hour after i sat down to do some work.

It is not a small solution containing, 8 projects, and around 5-600 files altogether. So i'm not expecting it to be lightning, but I am not expecting the delays i am seeing. It is unusable at the moment and really frustrating.

When I open the solution I can measure the traffic down the VPN and it seems very slow at around 6kbps up/down the line. the vpn is definately not slow, if I copy a file across the vpn using explorer, i get around 4-500 kbps, so i don't think it's a vpn issue. I have diabled all firewalls at both ends, and have even tried going back to ss6.0d but the problem is the same.

Interestingly, visual studio 2003 seems fine, it's still quite slow, but it becomes usable in 1-2 minutes, and then does not freeze again.

There is also nothing else running on the server, so it's not a server loading issue either.

Has anyone else come across this problem, or know of any solutions, or even anyway to find out what is going on behind the scenes.

How to set time of local files during the Branch operation?

Hi,

I want to set modified time of local files during the Branch operation like I do it during the Check Out operation ("Check Out ..." dialog > Advanced > Set file time: Current, Modification, Check In). But I cannot find any possibilities to do this via VSS IDE. Is it in principle possible?

Also I have found the article where the method I can use to control VSS via COM technology was described:

And there is possible to call described method with the flags shown below:

This flag belongs to the group of flags:

I.e. it must be possible to change time of local files during the Branch operation. I have tried to call the method with the corresponding arguments. The result is files were branched ok but the time of the files was not changed.

Maybe anybody know anything about this?

Always I try to open my solution, the IDE show this message:

The file 'MySolution.sln' needs to be checked out before it can be edited. The file was not checked out automatically because you have disabled automatic check out when files are edited in the Source Control options page.

I only have 1 project under solution file. In the Environment options pane of Source Control I have check "Get everything when openinng..." and "Check in everything when closing...", and "Chek out automatically" in "On Edit" and "On Save".

How can remove this message?

CVS and Source Control Plug-Ins

Hey all,

I have been using a CVS-NT server installed on a Windows Server 2003 box for source control. I was also using the PuskOK CVS-SCC proxy plug in (from www.pushok.com) to access the repository from the IDE on a networked WinXP machine, and access the repository using sspi and windows authentication. It worked well under VS2003. I have not made any changes (indeed, it still works well under VS2003), but VS2005 Team System does not remember that I am using the PushOK proxy when I restart the IDE, it will not bind back to the CVS repository for source control when I open the project from my local checked out version, it will not check out files from the repository when I edit them, and it does not show edited files as checked out from the CVS repository. I can open the solution from the CVS repository, but after that I might as well not have source control.

I guess I am curious if I am the only one with this problem, or if there is something I am not setting correctly in VS2005 (it just worked in VS2003). I just fear my only option is moving everything to VSS or maintaining everything with Tortoise CVS.

Problems checkin using HTTP

I'm trying do checkin in VS2008 and a VSS2005 database.

I have installed VSS2005 with internet access in another computer. I can get lastest version and I can do checkout but I can not do checkin.

I have Webdav allowed
I have Vssdownload and VSSUpload with permissions.

I have used fiddler and I get a 405 error.

Any ideas?

Hi, i'm developing a several websites under VS2003 on IIS6 and have a problem with VSS. Somehow my root web server path has been changed, so I cant checkout site in the right directory.
For example I have 2 web sites
C:\Web\Site1 and C:\Web\Site2
Then I try to open site1 from VSS I'm getting the error saying that my URL http://localhost/site1 doesnt map to the path C:\Web\Site2\Site1.
How can I checkout my project without this URL or maybe change my default URL back to C:\Web

How to UndoCheckout for specific user

The VSS helper tool I am developing includes (well, as a menu option so far) the feature to mass-undo checkouts of a specific user.
Visual SourceSafe Explorer allows to do that, but in a very boring item-by-item manner.

I can call IVSSItem->UndoCheckout(), and it will work, but just for MY checkouts.
The tool impersonates the Admin user and should be able to undo checkouts of any user.

IVSSItem->UndoCheckout() does not provide for passing the user as parameter.
IVSSCheckout has BSTR Username() property, but there is no way to obtain IVSSItem from IVSSCheckout instance.

Visual Studio 2005 (2008 installed too) + Visual Source Safe 2005, on Windows 7 64 bit - Trying to Save a checked out Reporting Services .RDL, gives error 'Operation could not complete'

When I try to save the .rdl in VS2005, the title bar of Visual Studio changes to 'Not responding', there's a lonnnnnggggg pause... and then it says 'Operation could not complete' and a dialog popup appears showing me the checked out folder and allowing me to click Save or Cancel. If I click Save again, the same happens again, with a gap between 5 seconds and 30 seconds, and normally errors out again. However, after (on average) about 6-9 save attempts, it will then succeed, after a pause of upto 2 minutes. As you can imagine, it takes an eternity to get any work done.

I'm expecting this is a DLL issue. Could be because I've got both VS2005 and VS2008 on the same machine.. or possible VS Source Safe 2005 doesn't like Windows 7??

Everything is service packed up (Source Safe even has that patch to improve compatability with VS2008)

There is 1 article in the forum referring to VS2003, Visual Source Safe, and the 'Operation could not complete', but it's dated around 2005 and refers to MDAC dll's, so I'm reluctant to follow the advice as I doubt it applies to Windows 7.. Any ideas please??

Source Control in Visual Studio Tools for Applications

I'm using Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Applications to edit my InfoPath forms. I just realized I don't have a plug-in installed for Visual Source Safe. I have VSS installed on the machine, but under Plug-in I don't see it. How can I check in my code?

in visual source safe my projects contain multi directory entries . one directory for solution and one directory for projects and rdl. What do i have to change to get the root directory in projects to contain solution ,projects and rdl under a single directory entry.
