Hi, I'm using VB2008 express, and I want to save my project: "VBprogram_V1" as "VBprogram_V2" and then make changes to the
Version 2 program. But there is no command in the File menu to do it. If I just copy my project folder to a new folder and give it
a different name, vb gives me a headache with heaps of errors I don't understand.

Maybe "Save as..." is in the commercial versions of VB???

Missing button on the BindingNavigator control

Hello, I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the .COM reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 7600 RTM.

Error: "A reference to 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\framework\v3.5\d3d9d.dll' could not be added. Please make sure the file is accessible, and that it is a valid assembly or COM component."

Thanks in advance for this. Basically, I've just started using Visual Basic - I'm completely new to programming altogether and thought it might be a useful skill - and I've been slowly working my way through the tutorials - from 'Learn VB' in the Start Page - and now the MsgBox function has disappeared! I have no idea why, as I'm doing the same thing (I think) as I was always doing. New Project > Windows Forms Application > Right Click on 'Form 1' in the solutions box > Source Code. Anyhow; when I type MsgBox there is neither a dropdown box with that name (IDE I think it's called?) and it becomes underlined with a squiggly blue line. I seem to remember that, in the IDE box, there were several different types of logos next to each name, but now only the logo that shows a windows with what looks like green highlighter written on it (you can see it if you type in #If) appears. I've already restarted the computer (via the start menu).

Find And Replace Command Not Working?

My Find/Replace Edit Menu command inside VB 2005 is not working anymore, and SQL Server 2005 as well. When I tried to check this feature in Microsoft Office applications, there is no problem at all. It's mysterious, I don't know what happen. I also tried to re-install VB and SQL, but still it didn't work.

I know it is a petty problem, but it plays an important role when editing your codes.

Why visual studio 2005 keeps eating up memory even it is in editing mode

Hi there, I need your help.

I am using Visual Studio 2005 with Service Pack1 installed. I am working on VB.Net project. However I am constantly choked up even I am in editing mode, i.e., I am NOT in debugging mode.

Here is what bothers me:
(1) open my development project in VB.NET
(2) Monitor Windows Task Manager, the VB.net development process has a name of devenv.exe. This process uses about 200 KB in memory space in the beginning
(3) then I start editing a vb file - I am doing some typing, copy/paste of text
(4) While monitoring the task manager, I found the devenv.exe process keeping using more and more memory
(5) At some point, which is about 10 minutes after I began my work, its memory usage reaches 1.5 GB ( i have a 2G ram)
(6) Then the program is choked up - when I try to save the .vb file or performing 'Build'. It gives message saying there is no enough memory.
(7) I now have to terminate my work and start over

Hi I have installed VS2008 in my machine. I made a small program in the VB. When I start debugging, the system responds by indicating that the program is running but I don't see any output. Is their a possibility that VS2008 debuggers woun't work with Windows XP Home Edition which comes with my laptop.

Hi guys, this is my first time here and im a little lost - so i'm hoping this is the right area to post this (I have used other forums before, but jumping in and out of various msdn area's makes figruing out a site map very differcult at first).

Anyway, i've got Visual Basic 2008 Express edition and im working through the Absolute Begineers Guide to VB. I'm currentally at database's (lessons 8 and 9 so far) and unfortuantly the video is using VB 05 and sql server 05, all i have is sql compact 3.5. While i can do most of what they ask, i cannot do it with the easy they can (in particular i do not have as many options, and i cannot create a diagram).

BTW Im currentally using the add -> new item -> "Local Database".

Now there is a different item i can add called "Service-Based Database" which requires SQL server 05 - sounds like the one they are using in the vids.

So in keeping in my 'special' way of doing things i decided to download the 08 version of SQL server and not suprisingly it doesn't work by magic.

So basically, how do I get my VB IDE to be able to intergrate the SQL 08 features like it apparentally can with 05.

If this is really obvious, or has been answered before (I have tried searching - but don't really know what to search) at least it will be easy for you to solve.

EDIT: Its getting worse, now when i try to (using the compact 3.5) try to get a DataGridView or Details view of my table from the datasources onto my form, it crashes in debug (ie while running)

hi all,
i m getting problem inh my project, which in VB.NET.
Actually i was developing a small software, to be familier with visual basic.NET, as i was coding with Visual Basic.
everything was running very fine, day before i installed winXp again ( freash installeation). Then simply VS 2005,with out any error.
Now i m able to open, my project, i can edit it, but if i try to build the executable, or compilation. it is giving strange error.

Tabbed Web Browser : Making it navigate

I have created a tabbed browser, and for the Go button, i have added the following commands

CType(TabControl1.SelectedTab.Controls.Item(0), WebBrowser).Navigate(TextBox1.Text)

The program dubugs fine, and the first tab navigates to whatever URL is typed, however, when I open the second tab, and try to navigate, the program takes me to the coding page in VB, and highlights the above mentioned Code, and gives the following error

I am using Visual Basic.Net 2003 with an Access 2000 database.

An integral part of the program that i'm working on is a DataGrid which I am filling from three different queries, based on the user's input. The Grid properties are coded with specific requirements for each of the queries. I have two simple (hopefully) problems.

1) There is no scroll bar on the grid and I can't find a property or event that will allow me to add the Vertical Scroll Bar. How do I do that.

2) The grids contain only four columns each. I want the user to be able to click on a cell and populate four string variables.

Has anyone any suggestions?

Hovering over variable name when debugging does not trigger a popup showing the current value

When debugging in the old VS 2008 with the program stopped at a breakpoint, I could hover over a variable, say a string, and the value of that string would appear in a little box by the mouse pointer. In visual studio 2010 beta 2 this doesn't appear to happen. Is it a feature that needs 'turning on' somehow?

I've tried debugging in 64 bit mode and x86 mode, neither works. Not found any other references to this from a google search.

Program terminates without exception details

After dealing with the pain-in-the-____ error "The path is not on a legal form" witch only occured after dragging a file system watcher onto the form, by creating the file watcher in the code. When an event is raised, i have to tell the user what happened. I can do this using messageboxes, without any problem. But, when I wanted the output to be displayed in a textbox, the program terminates without any warning.

Controlling a Modal form from a module

Hi Geeks,

I have a situation where I need to display a Modal Window from a vb.net module and feed the contents to that modal form from the module.
I am showing the form , feeding data to it from a class module and trapping the events in it using a timer control from the module.
It works fine with Show() method but it doesn't with ShowDialog().
If I used ShowDialog() then I was not able to continue with the code followed by it and not able to update any contents in the modal form.

I am using VS2003 version.
Is there any workaround to this?
I appreciate your Ideas/ guidance in this regard.

Tool for Creating a report from a text file

There was a similar question posed on the C++ forum back in February to which I responded yesterday, but unfortunately, did not get a response. I am therefore putting this question in the VB forum.

I have a VB 2005 project which is actually an add-in to Outlook 2003, which was I was able to debug fine until earlier this week. Now I cannot debug it at all - the message in the subject is displayed when I hover the mouse over the breakpoint which shows a yellow icon in place.

Hi All,

I have a VB.NET application that uses the AXWindowMediaPlayer ActiveX to embed mpg videos to my application.

I have used the Play/pause/stop Ctlcontrols a lot but now i am stuck as i needed to change the video size of the playing video from 100 to 200%
hence my Questions:
- How can i by code change the video size of the video being played? by Video size i do not mean the control's size.. but the Video being played inside it. for example, i could want the videos to play at 200% and not at 100%.
- Is there a way to check the dimensions of the video being played so that i can by code change the video size if required as per the video. :-)

Hope somebody can help.. i am stuck at this and NEED a solution.

VB Compiler slow on a large solution with extension method project

I'm working on a larger VB application (framework v3.5) where the compile time continues to get slower and slower the larger it grows. It currently takes about 7 minutes to compile just the extensions project. We have other similar projects in C# that don't experience the slow compile time. Has anyone else seen this and does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it?

How to call the VB Code Formatter from macro

Is it possible to call the VB code formatter from within a macro?

I wrote a macro that automatically adds a call to the logger in side an function or sub when it is created. But when I change the TextEditor.Enter command to my macro, no code formating takes place.

Is there a way to call the original command Edit.BreakLine(Enter(TextEditor)) ??

There is a note about soapsuds.exe from microsoft:

Beginning with the .NET Framework version 3.5, this tool is obsolete. Instead, set a reference to the DLL of the remote object in the client project. By doing so, the compiler can extract the metadata.

I'm trying to create or set a reference to a DLL residing in local or remote IIS from within Visual Studio 2008, but I always fail.
Does anybody know how to do this?

I can create a proxy from the DOS command by something like this:
[c:\d stuff\mywinapp\iisremoteclient\consoleclient\bin]soapsuds -url:http://localhost/iisremotinghosting/customer.rem?wsdl -oa:BOWSDLProxy.dll

This way, I get a proxy dll (BOWSDLProxy.dll), and then from the Visual Studio, I can add reference to this proxy dll, and do the programming to call the remoted object residing in my local IIS.

Properties settings anomaly

I am having a problem with my properties settings variables not working like they are supposed to.EX:

The next time I run the program from the IDE, debugging it, I check the properties settings for democount and it is still set to zero, but when I run the program from the IDE, it has been incremented like I expected. What I didn't expect was that when I went to reset it in properties settings, it was still zero, but not in the actual program. I have tried clicking on Syncronize, but it does not help. The propert settings change and are saved correctly, I just don't seem to be able to see their current values in the IDE , as they all look as though they have never been changed from when I set them initially.
I am confused. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I simply don't understand how they work.

What I want to do is this: Set my demo variable to true in properties settings and have the demo counter incremented whenever they run the program. Then when I want to reset the democount for the next user it is already setting at zero, (the initial value), so I can't change it. What now?

Visual Basic Express 2008 displaying "Save as" Dialog when saving a file in the IDE

Whenever I modify a file in the IDE in Visual Basic Express 2008, and then press the "Save" or "Save All" button, the "Save As" dialog opens, then says that a file of that name already exists and requests confirmation of the save. This didn't happen in Express 2005 as far as I remember. Is there a setting that I have missed that would prevent this problem? thanks.

I include 2 exes in my setup project which share dlls. In 2008 this just resulted in warnings when building but I now get an error instead indicating that the file is already included.

I can fix this by excluding them but they will reappear after each build so have to be excluded again which slows the process down - example error message is below:

How to reference textboxes with a string?

To simplify my problem, lets say I have 200 textboxes on a form. I want the first 100 to become disabled in a certain subroutine. I don't want to write 100 lines to disable each textbox; I'd rather write a loop to do it but can't figure out how. For instance:

dim i as integer

dim s as string

for i = 1 to 100

s = "Textbox"&(i)

I tried "dim c as new control" then "c.name=s" but I don't think this makes "c" as a member of my form and it didn't do anything as a result. I think I need to figure out how to declare c as a control that exists within my form but can't figure out the syntax for that. Any help is appreciated.

Publish - Won't copy database on setup

I am using VB 2008 Express. When I publish my project, all files show up properly in the publish directory. When I go to setup.exe it installs with no errors. When I go to launch the program it says it is missing the database. Sure enough the database that is suppose to go along with the install does not get copied over. If I manually copy the file to the install directory and remove the .deploy from the name the program works like it should.

It is in the folder publish\application files\mydatabase.sdf.deploy and I checked the manifest and it is in there. For some reason it does not get copied over.

Any help would be appretiated. I've posted the publish folder on my webstite http://software.ozark-development.com/downloads/macping.zip.

Visual Studio Crash

Hi, I have a windows form that I created with VS 2010 VB.NET. The form has a bunch of check boxes. Very, very basic form.

If I select 6 check boxes then go to distribure vertically, Visual Studio crashes!

I have an AVI screen capture of what is happening if it helps.

Problem associating datasource with vb project

I am running Visual Studio Professional 2008 on Vista home - using VB to develop a database app. When I try to add a datasource to my project (an Access database) using the wizard - I get the following error message.

" An unexpected error has occurred.
Error message: Could not load type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Datadesign.SyncDesigner.DslPackage, Version - 9.0.0.0, ..."

The database appears in server explorer but the Data Sources window still tells me that the current project has no data sources associated with it.

I don't know if it is connected but I also get the following error message when I first select the toolbox window:

"Package load failure
Package 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Xaml has failed to load properly'"

I have reinstalled Visual Studio and this seems to make no difference.
Can anyone help to shed some light on the problem.

DataGridView in Vb dot net does not show properties panel

I have a DataGridView control in a form, and as of a day ago, when I click on the control, I get *no* properties listed in the Properties pane of the IDE. The properties pane is totally blank. Neither properties nor events are visible. I have tried everything. Prior to this, the properties and events displayed normally.

Other controls' properties are displayed when I click on them, but not the DataGridView control. If, after clicking on my DataGridView control, I use the combo-box on the Properties pane to look at any other control's properties, they come right up. If I then select my control's name (DataGridView1) in the Properties pane combo-box, the IDE crashes completely and I have to restart.

I tried a repair re-installation. The same things happens.

I can set properties etc. programatically, but that sorta defeats the point of an IDE, not so?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Cannot install my Clickonce App on a user's computer

My clickonce app has the following pre-requisites:

Windows Installer 3.1

.NET Framework 3.5

Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Report Viewer

Microsoft Visual Basic Power Packs 3.0

SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 (x86)

The application has been successfully installed on more than 30 computers. All but 2 computers, have had installation problems.

For awhile, one of the two computers in question, would not resolve installation of SQL server 2005 Express edition. It would go through the motions of downloading the program and then attempting an install and after a good 30 minutes, an error would show up indicating that the installation had failed. The user continued to have a nuisance error pop up appear when he'd log into his computer.

Long story short, I resolved that problem. So now all of the pre-requisites are installed and confirmed as successfully installed. The clickonce application does not install however. The following log file was created as a result of this error:

Uneffective changes

I'm developing a Windows Service, but for some reason, the changes I'm making to my code file aren't taking effect. I clean, build, and rebuild the solution as well as all the files that I'm changing, but nothing's happening.

Is this a problem with the installation of the service, or something wrong with my IDE? I just now thought that maybe I shouldn't be rebuilding the files...

Help is urgently needed and will be greatly appreciated.

debug and immediate window

I was running Visual Studio 2008 on my computer went through a whole VB progamming course with no problems. I recently had to have my computer hard drive erased and reloaded with windows xp to eliminate a virus. When I got it from the shop Visual Studio 2008 had not been backed up so I reinstalled the Professional edition from my disc. I opted fo the recommended installation. Every thing seems Ok except when I put a debug.Writelie (" Hello"} in the code nothing appears in the immediate window when it is executed. If I go to the immediate window and type the same line and hit return the string appears in the immediate window. If I assign a value to a variable in the program and put the debug.writeline command in the code module nothing appears in the immediate window, but if I go to the immediate window and type debug. writeline (var) and hit return the value of var apppears in the immediate window. i went to the debug menu and selected windows then clicked on immediate but it didn't highlight or show check mark. When the project builds after start debugging the immediate window appears. In the help it talks about a trace listener and insertig a line of code in the compile command line. I am not that experienced. Any help in solving this would be appreciated. Thank you

DataSet Designer and Database Changes

It seems that there is no way to preserve changes to a DataSet made with the Designer when there is a change to the database. The only way to get the Designer to rescan the database to incorporate a change is to delete the DataSet and then recreate it. This of course blows away all the mods you've made in the designer. There should be a way to have the Designer rescan the database while preserve all the mods that have been made in the Designer. Otherwise the Designer is essentially useless after the initial generation of code. What am I missing?

As a workaround, I tried incorporating the changes to the database by making the same change in the Designer rather than recreating. However, clearly no one tested this is it only partially regenerates the code based on the change. Try changing a field from nulls not allowed to allowed. This works when you add data to the DataTable, but bombs as soon as you update the database, because the DataSet code does and the database code doesn't get regenerated.

Clearly I must be going about this the wrong way. Any ideas? Thx.
