The type initializer for 'Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SharePoint.Integration.GeminiServiceApplication' threw an exception

Question

I have installed PowerPivot in "Add to existing farm" mode on another server. It's part of the SharePoint farm and successfully completed the installed of an Analysis Services for SharePoint installtion.

When adding the required PowerPivot Service Application, the following error is thrown in the event log while the "Processing" screen hangs:

The Execute method of job definition Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPConfigurationRefreshJobDefinition (ID cb412ea3-f24d-478b-894c-f643aeb28bbe) threw an exception. More information is included below.

The type initializer for 'Microsoft.AnalysisServices.SharePoint.Integration.GeminiServiceApplication' threw an exception.

I cannot proceed with the PowerPivot installation and can't find a help article related to this particular problem.
