We have SharePoint 2003 on one farm and we have a separate cluster running MS SQL 2005. We want to upgrade the SQL server to 2008 R2 befoer we upgrade the Sharepoint server. This will leave us in a situation where we will be running SharePoint 2003 with a SQL 2008 database. I have not been able to finad anything where MS says one way or the other if SharePoint 2003 will work with SQL 2008.

Does anyone know if Sp 2003 will work with SQL 2008 R2 or if there is a document that states it one way or the other?

    Hi MXRacer99,

You cannot upgrade directly from Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.

You can perform a series of database attach upgrades to first upgrade your content to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and then to SharePoint Server 2010.

For more information about the detailed steps, please refer to the following article:

I have this question as well.  Not talking about upgrading the SharePoint itself, just the database from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008R2

    Thanks

SQL Server 2008 (or newer) is not supported with WSS 2.0 or SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

See Hardware and Software Requirements (Windows SharePoint Services 2.0), Database Requirements:

    Database Requirements

In addition to the operating system and Web server software, you must also have a database installed on your server (or on a separate server) to run Windows SharePoint Services 2.0. The following databases are supported:

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition or SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, with the latest service pack

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition or SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, with the latest service pack

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Workgroup Edition or SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition, with the latest service pack

    • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE)
