Hi
A Sharepoint calendar is a web part in its own right , have a look at this tip: http://blog.fpweb.net/sharepoint-web-parts-make-calendar-sharing-simple/

What you can do is to sync the Calendar webpart with Outlook (desktop) , then if you click on it, you'll get the Calendar Tools in the ribbon. Click Calendar, then click the "Connect To Outlook". You'll then get a synced Sharepoint site calendar beside your Outlook desktop calendar. Then if you add meetings, appointments to that in in Outlook it will be synchronized to the Calendar web part on your Sharepoint site.
But I don't understand why you didn't see the Calendar in the web part gallery in the first place. Try the following:
1) Open a site page, then select Edit Page from the Site Actions Menu. In
2) In the "Editing Tools" context Ribbon, select "Insert"
3) Select Web Part
4) In Categories, click "Lists and Libriaries"
5) In the Web Parts section, select "Calendar" (still not there? ) .
6) In the right hand part of the page, click Add.
