Pivot Chart and Pivot Tables disappearing field buttons and drop zones

I recently installed Access 2010 on a brand new Dell computer (Vostro 460 running Windows 7). I proceeded to open a previously created query as a Pivot Chart to discover no data on it. The datasheet view shows data. There are no drop zones nor field buttons. The show/hide on the ribbon has no effect on the absent drop zones. The show/hide on the Properties pop-up has no effect on the absent drop zones.
Tried creating a new blank database. A new query will show the drop zones. However, they disappear as soon as I drop a field on any of them, and they never come back.
Has anyone ever experienced and fixed this?
