"Unidentified Publisher"

    Question

  • I know this has been asked before, but I just want to make sure I fully understand what I need to do to eliminate this prompt. I have an application written in C# 2.0 that must be run as an Administrator in Windows Vista. I have embedded a manifest file with this property set:
    <requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" uiAccess="false" />

    This works as expected, but I am prompted with the "Allow/Cancel" dialog and the publisher is listed as "Unidentified Publisher". Is there anyway to avoid this prompt? Will signing my code work? If so, who have you had a good & affordable experience with?

    Thanks,
    Jon Tackabury

  • Nevermind, I have answered my own question. It involves using a service instead of an application.

  • Jon,

    If you sign your code the publisher name will change but you would still get UAC prompt.

  • How do some programs (like anti-virus or firewall programs) avoid this UAC prompt and still run using elevated privileges?
